Very good comments and I agree that the telecoms aren't very innovative. However, they could probably turn around and change if they were going to be challenged!
Telus has definitely challenged Shaw with the IPTV they now provide. There is competition and advancement in Fiber Optic.
On the other hand, outside of Shaw, most of these telecoms make over 40% of their revenue from Wireless and some have secured exclusive content by buying TV channels. Rogers owns many media channels and radio network. The revenu stream for the telecoms is now Wireless, Cable and Media so I would not call doom yet if internet competition came along ...
