Actually I really got interested in NAT after reading this article. The lowest that the dividend has gone has been .278/quarter in 1998, which is not bad. Most investors in stocks that pay high but fluctuating dividends should also reconsider the idea of yield on cost.

When you purchase NAT at 40 and you generate $9/year in dividends now that's great news. But what happens if profits drop and DPS goes lower to $1/year? Your yield on cost ultimately drops to 2.5%. The shipping industry has enjoyed a strong boom over the past 5 years. I wonder if there are any shipping stocks which have traded on the US markets for more than 10 years?
