  • Seven Highest Yielding Stocks Going Ex Dividend in November [View article]
    Notsosmart,

I totally agree with you on this one - if you start early your dividend income would be huge after several decades. However in this day and age it is possible to cut investment costs to the minimum by choosing low cost brokerages like Zecco.. I also think that Bank of American also offers free trades to customers whose net worth is over a certain amount.

That's a very risky strategy, where you are not investing but speculating that you would be getting something for free - both dividends and small capital gains.

People have been trying similar dividend capture strategies for decades with poor results. At least they add liquidity to the markets.

Of course if you extend the research from 1896 - 2008 then the so called Haloween Indicator doesn't produce exceptionally good results..

  • Is This BUD for You? A Volatility Opportunity [View article]
Of course if the deal falls through BUD could go lower. The dividend payments would make this stock worth keeping for long term holders.
And of course if the deal falls through it might collapse after decemebr.

  • Microchip Technology: A Good Dividend Paying Stock [View article]
I am sure MCHP is a decent dividend stock. The main issue that I see there is that the payout ratio is pretty high, which puts the dividend payment in jeopardy of a cut or freeze.

Another negative that I see is that over 70% of sales come from outside the US. Since the dollar is increasing, wouldn't that put further pressure on earnings?

  • Does It Pay To Follow Buffet Blindly? [View article]
Actually I probably should have added that one shouldn't follow BRK.A blindly. I believe that investors should do their own homework before they trade any stocks. For example I have not been comfortable initiating a position in USB because of its high payout ratio.

It's never a good idea to purchase something jsut because a guru is telling you that he/she purchased it because you might end up the last to be informed when the guru starts selling.

  • Let Buffet Do the Buying for You [View article]
The way I see it, Buffett will be buying something similar to what BRK.A already owns since he has done the research for purchasing the stocks in his holding company in the first place. The other option is him purchasing BRK.A/B shares directly. The third option is him purchasing shares in companies nobody except him and his broker would know ( or close circle of friends).
If you stick with the first two options, chances are a BRK.B or A would be a wise investment to make.

Of course this is not a recommendation so do your own dilligence before investing.

For those investors who don't have any funds to invest now, they could re-invest their dividend payments or hold tight.

  • Why the Price Dividend Ratio Is Better Than the P/E Ratio [View article]
An interesting article. Actually most investors have been using a different kind of Price/Dividend Ratio called "dividend yield".

Any look at historical dividend yields however should also be looked from the perspective of interest rates as well.
