wdjax0n: A very common question on the MMA interest rate. So common that I added a link in all my analysis articles to explain it.

Somewhere between my site and here, the link was lost. Here it is for your reference:

TheRenegade: You are correct. that was a transposition on my part. CINF's yield should be 5.3%.

LuckyPick: I only show DE with 8 years of increases (flat in 2003 with 2002). For less than 10 years of increases I would need a higher yield.

Ragingpup: Total return was calculated using the xirr formula in Excel, which takes into account timing of purchases and dividends. In the case of Intel I was fortunate enough to purchase a large block days before its last run up.

For more information on how I calculate returns, see DFL-Portfolio.xls at:

  • Building a Sustainable, High-Yield Portfolio and 10 Stocks to Consider [View article]
L1329-8: You are correct that no one knows the future. I am not smart enough to time the market, so I buy every month regardless of the market. However, I try to buy the best value available on the day I make the purchase, giving consideration to dividend fundamentals, valuation, future prospects and and, of coarse, current valuation.

I track over 200 stocks so there is generally always something worth buying, though the list continues to get smaller.

It is time for a good correction! :)

  • Portfolio Update: April 2011 [View article]
gobraves39401: The PCP is a subset of my income portfolio. It was started years after my income portfolio that's why it has fewer stocks. Some of the stocks held in my income portfolio might not be a buy for years to come. For me the number of stocks I hold tends to hover in the 35-40 range. It is not a conscience decision, but has just happened over time and seems to be where my portfolio's equilibrium is.

    Graham and Dodd Investor:

"raw materials, salaries and wages, day-to-day operations"

All of this is covered in FCF (operating cash flow - capx). FCF is then used to pay interest, pay down debt, dividends, acquisitions and share repurchases.
