As far as de-leveraging is concerned, I think banks already took the hit for most of the credit card losses. What needs to be changed is the credit scoring system of Experian, Equifax and TU. At the peak of recession, banks like Chase were still lobbying congress to make recovery from bankruptcy even harder than it already is.

Chevron claims that that the Three Big Detroit auto makers used their additive to pass the EPA's regulations on emissions. 1. Chevron always maintained if not increased its dividends throughout recessions.
2. Chevron's jet fuel is what is used by most airlines today, there's no other jet fuel that even comes close to its kind.
3. Techron (favored by all american automakers) and vast LNG projects
4. Scroll up to the "key players" chart, and compare the profit margins of Chevron to others, Chevron's management is very aggressive in keeping tight control on costs and yielding more crude from existing reserves (not new reserves).

However, I do agree that it'd be better to track companies with increased instit. ownership, but how would you track the increased fund activity on day-to-day basis? Most of the mentioned stocks are mid-cap and they're already discovered by most fund managers. The point I was driving at is to park your money where there's a lot of institutional buy/sell activity, not necessarily what closed end funds are buying and holding long term. The reason 401k funds under perform is because those funds are not actively traded. Sometimes the "undiscovered' stocks stay "undiscovered" in terms of volume. Buffet bought Coca-Cola...and railroads: tangible value businesses, and true he did pick a few distressed companies that turned out to be value gems.
