  • How Much Is Johnson & Johnson Worth? [View article]
You are right. However, note that I already assume '0 growth' after the 5th year. So, including the E0 earnings partially compensates for that.

  • Why I'm Short Turkey [View article]
The point that Mr. Goldman missed is the correlation of Turkish stocks with U.S. Financials. By taking position against TUR, he played against U.S. Financials. But, we all know how U.S. banks performed in 2012. Here is a graph that shows correlation of TUR with JPM:

  • 3 MLPs For Attractive Returns [View article]
Of course, one is selling an asset and generating substantial cash, whereas the other is buying it, and reducing cash flow. But, in the long-term their performance should converge to each other.

If I were you, I would stay away from MLP ETFs for sure. While taxes on MLPs can somehow be played around, some MLP ETFs are subject to corporate taxes. Their returns have been substantially below the returns of individual MLPs.

  • The Future Is Bright For General Electric [View article]
Since the collapse of financial institutions, GE is re-organizing itself to focus on its core businesses. Thus, I think the trend to acquire other companies have been reversed.

  • American Capital Agency: Recent Moves Can Shield Against Strong Headwinds [View article]
Expansionary monetary policy means more money supply which induces a "Fall in interest rates".

However, its short-term and long-term effects depend on the period you define. Besides the period definition, there are always significant lags in policy implementations. That is why FED employs hundreds of PhDs to estimate these effects, but even their margin of error is high.

    Dear Dividends#1,

    Thanks for the nice comments.

I sold my shares back in 2012 when the FED announced its "operation twist". The current stock price is higher than what I sold it for. As a basic principle, before buying a stock again, I wait until the price falls below what I sold it for.

  • DryShips: Recent Gains May Prove To Be Temporary [View article]
Thanks for the comments. We try to write balanced pieces on DRYS. This one is on the negative side, but several times in the past we shared the same positive viewpoint on the stock. In fact, we were among the very few who forecasted the stock's early-year hike.

  • Armour Residential: Strong Dividends Set To Continue [View article]
Share dilution is a very common practice in high-yield stocks. MLPs also diluted their shares substantially in recent years, but they still keep providing distributions.

I think Berkshire looks more similar to a giant mutual/hedge fun rather than a conglomerate. Most of its investments are based on minority shares in well-known public companies.

You are right. I used the trailing 12 months dividend numbers when calculating the yield. The last dividend payment is unfortunately lower than the first payment, but there is always the possibility for the dividend trend to reverse.

Shelby, I assume that you are referring a 5% up which implies a nominal interest like 8% - 9%. I do not see such scenario happening in near future.

The MLP sector has lagged the markets last year, but I am positive that they might catch up in 2013.

Thank you for the nice piece Derek. I hope to see more ones in the future. Can you perform a similar analysis on Apple?
