James RevShark DePorre called it a market leader today in his podcast on greenfaucet.com. He also named EXM and GNK as stock picks.
Just wanted to let you all know that now is the time to get in if you haven't already.
You can listen on the site under podcasts if you want more info (he talks about the market generally too) ]]>

The dry bulk market will stay strong due to increased iron ore and coal production/demand. The container ind is more prone to the global slowdown.

I recommend listening to some of these conference calls prior to investing in this industry. It is more complicated than most.

There will be a big increase in world wide dry bulk vessels in the coming years. Depending on how many of the shipyards stay in business (due to higher steel costs), and how many of the older vessels need to be retired, the dry bulk indexes could come down dramatically.

There is also potential for a lot of consolidation in this sector. Once the dry bulk stocks begin to move, I say go with DRYS. Their earnings are impressive compared to their peers. DRYS is better known, and has a higher beta. Therefore, I think it will have more momentum and will work better as a trade.

Lots of research necessary here. Good luck.]]>

So don't panic if your position drops into the red for a stretch of time, wait out the cycle and sell into run ups. I traded DRYS from the 60's to the 110 range and stepped to the sidelines right before the drop back to the 70's.

I am long in GNK and NAT (both good dividend pays) but use DRYS for trading purposes only right now

i wouldn't overplay this 'slow down'. the dry bulk business is quixotic to say the least. i've found articles in complete opposition in the same or consecutive trade periodicals. additionally i see expansion, aggressive expansion, per acquisition and exploration vis a via the coal and iron ore/steel industries.

i guess wall st and its usual suspects are looking at a different world than these global corporations; companies that feel confidant in investing 2008 capital for profits and market share years down the road. if industry is the body wall st is the tape worm.

General Cable: Poised for a Good Run http://seekingalpha.com/article/78431-general-cable-poised-for-a-good-run?source=feed#comment-207184 207184 Wed, 16 Jul 2008 16:09:12 -0400
However, I seem to have pretty much talked myself out of trying to invest to participate in this coming boom.

1). As someone on another post commented- commodity business. Do these guys have any unique capabilities? Or can a lot of cable companies make the same stuff?

2). Those companies that DO have some sort of unique position in these new technologies I suspect tend to already be pretty pricey. Those are the kind of stocks that Jim Cramer likes.

On the other hand, as a value investor, a company like these guys is not a bad buy just on value basis.

On the other hand, the fact is that even though the oil boom may be due for a correction, the notion that the petro stocks are booming is just plain wrong. Yes some natural gas stocks and oil infrastructure stocks have seen huge runups, but stocks of the integrated oil companies have sat there like beached whales during this oil boom.

Because oil stocks are so dirt cheap and I am a value investor, I am hanging on to mine, namely Conoco and Petro Canada. Did you know that Petro Canada has a projected PE ratio of 5?

Not to mention the oil refining stocks which have been plummeting during this oil boom. I picked up some Valero in the hope that they will see some recovery.

There's no way RIG earns 35% on equity over the long-term. Assuming a 15% return on equity, which is 50% higher than their historical average, they'd be earning $6.60, and selling at 21x that.

As far as margins, they are currently elevated b/c of the high prices that rigs are commanding. There was a similar supply shortage of shipping vessels a few years ago, and rates soared, and the stocks soared, but collapsed later as new ships came online and rates dropped.

If you buy this stock, you are betting against historical precedent-and you are paying a high multiple to book and normalized earnings in what is usually a mediocre business.]]>

The Brazilians ARE finding enormous quantities of oil and gas at depths of 35000 or more feet.

And, yes, the technologies are, or will be available to enable production from these depths. It might not be as cheap to produce as oil used to be, but it will be there through the transition to alternative supplies of energy.
