  • Dividend Stock Peril Ahead [View article]
Qualified dividends are defined by rules set by the IRS, not by the company. There are a couple of complicated rules for specific situations defined in the IRS literature (see IRS publication 550), but the main rule is you need to hold the equity for 60 days prior to the ex-dividend date to treat the dividend as qualified. Thus you can receive qualified and non-qualified dividends from the same company in the same year.

  • VIX Curve Idea [View article]
I believe we have reached reasonable conditions to take our profits on this trade. The December kink nearly gone and the curve has steepened. I chose to play this one as December against October. That spread widened to $1.65 at today's close from around -$0.15 when I wrote this. While there are likely more profits to wring out of the trade, we got what we came for and I like to exit this type of spread trade while we are still a few contracts away from spot to keep our volatility low.

  • Why I Am Short Gold: 5 Reasons [View article]
Good point. In fact, I am a little short Treasuries with put options, but I just dont think they have turned the corner yet, so I leave it a very small position for now.

Thanks for your comment and pointer to Mises Institute; looks like some interesting reading there. I appreciate your idea and I think it is a similar thought to what freecmorgan posted as well about what could happen if the economy begins a more rapid expansion and borrowers increase demand for all that Fed money. Time will tell if Bernake can drain the reserves appropriately.
