  • Bullish And Bearish Options Plays On Sirius XM [View article]
    Thanks for the article Rocco

Data indicate that the block of 15000 Dec 1.5 puts that traded on SIRI yesterday were sold-to-close. An investor exited the position and probably offset positions opened on 8/18 and 8/19 when 30000 contracts were opened. The stock was around $1.77 at the time and the contract was trading at 15 and 18 cents. The puts are possibly being sold on the view the decline in the stock has run its course.

Great question. Selling puts below market is a worthwhile idea -- only on stocks that you want to own. If there is a pullback, you will get assigned. You will be asked to buy 100 shares of stock for every put that is sold. On the other hand, if a bottom is in, the puts expire worthless and you keep the premium.

I also like the calendar or diagonal spreads using calls if you expect the market to stay flat or dip a bit more and then rally over the longer-term. I've recently done this -- selling Oct and Nov calls against some Jan 2013 calls.

Impressive rally in final hour. The Dow closed up 154 points and 400 points off session lows!

    Hi John,

We have some free charts and tables on our web site, whatstrading.com. Look at the tables and enter a symbol into the search box and you can get put/call volume charts by ticker. You can get volume by exchange updates at the options clearing corporation [OCC] web site. The Chicago Board Options Exchange web site also has lot of free tools and info.

Pinz, yes, when we say "tied" it can be to long or short stock. A lot of times, the stock side of trade is unwound after the position is entered. That is, they hedge the initial trade.

Alpha-seeker, there's been a lot of downside put selling in VIX lately. This seems to reflect expectations that volatility will stay high through the fall and the historically volatile months of Sep and Oct.

Yes, the 15-month high of 48 was set on 8/8 and anything north of 40 is a historically high level. It has a lot to do with the financials and fears of another credit crunch.

Yes, thank you for the comments. After re-reading the SIRI post, I agree, it sounds a bit like gibberish if you don't trade options. I pick and choose a handful of blog posts for the recap and this was not one of my best picks.

Basically, investors have been selling $2 calls on SIRI, which is above the current market price and so they might not expect the stock to move above $2 -- or they'd be buying rather than selling $2calls.

But this call selling or writing might be by shareholders. So, if long stock and selling calls, that's a covered call play -- basic options strategy.

    Hi,

From what I understand, the 17.5 - 27.5 spread was closing.

So, the only new position is in the Jan 24 puts, which were bought.

Oops. LSI should be National Semi (NSM). T-I is not bidding for LSI.

With the stock up to $348.50 this morning, the spread is worth 60 cents. But, if the stock fails to close above $350, both options will expire worthless and the debit paid (10 cents) is lost. I personally would be taking the 500 percent profit at this point. ha.

Hi, the stock was up 59 cents. No the spread.

The spread is in the weekly options that expire today. They paid a dime for the spread, 11 cents for the 350s minus a penny for the 355s.
