Why now? The loud cover of Barron's calls for Dow 15K in 2013. The corresponding article relies on data from Jeremy Siegel, whose Stocks for the Long Run came out while the 1990s run was still a wholesome bull market. His message eventually got twisted into an "all stocks, no matter the price" mantra, with others publishing Dow 36,000 to mark the epic top. [View news story]
can we just stop talking about the dow altogether? if IBM comes out with some super product the dow can go to 45,000. lets just keep it to the s&p here fellas. this is SA afterall

how a stock has "done" in the past has nothing to do with what it will do in the future. WFR is a bankrupt company that had to put up every asset it owns to get a loan. GTAT just did a convertible offering at 3% and will still have EPS at .95 per share assuming full dilution. find out how to do a different kind of article because this is total garbage. LONG GTAT
hey thanks for reading and for your compliment. the recent purchase of a german tv manufacturer points to them going full steam ahead with this, i hope they can pull it off.
1. a stock split is a magicians trick. it could work to drive the price up but i dont think we need to resort to tricks for people to realize value, its just going to take longer. splitting would make the stock less volatile, and would leave it open to be included in the dow - so i see the benefits.
2. they could raise the dividend and still be fine, and i am sure that they will, year after year for a very long time. this will eventually be a part of every dividend seekers portfolio, they just will be paying much more per share than you and I when that time finally comes
I'm glad if people can learn from my experience. If I were to ever invest in china again it will never represent more than 4 percent of my portfolio. Forever scarred

Apple (AAPL -0.3%) resumes trading after an apparent "fat finger" sends the shares from near $600 to $542.80, and sets off the stock's circuit breaker. [View news story]
as a former day trader at a securities firm this is very simple. you can target a buyer or a seller as long as it is posted. you just press the up button. say i wanted to buy 500,000 shares of apple below a certain price but the current ask is only 5,000 shares - i dont want to just put in a buy order for 500,000 shares - i will push the stock up because everyone will see my order. instead i may look higher than the current price to find an ask that has significant size maybe even 500,000 (very unlikely put still this happens alot). I would just take my cursor and place it on that ask and execute. very simple i just bought 500,000 shares well above asking price. i can talk about this more if anyone is interested.
While there are still plenty of risks to an economic recovery, the start of 2012 is nothing like the 2008-2009 crisis, observes Goldman's Jim O'Neill. One third of the euro zone that’s supposedly falling apart is actually improving, and China appears close to a soft landing. "The evidence from all over the place is that it’s nothing like '08." if you believe companies are cooking the books can you provide one that we can research? do you have any proof or insider information? what exactly is cooked? earnings? do we have a bunch of enrons on our hands? Chinese reverse mergers have depressed the appetite for risk as well. Can you imagine if there were finally some clarity? The mom & pop investor has fled out of the market and into the greatest bubble since housing - bonds. Volume has been higher than it has ever been starting in 2007. Volume peaked during the crisis in 2009 but is still substantially higher than any other time in the markets history. so im not sure WHAT lack of volume you are talking about
As earnings season crashes upon us, it's become glaringly apparent that corporations are sitting on record piles of cash, reluctant to invest in their businesses or hire new workers in an uncertain economic outlook. At present, cash balances have swelled by 14% and are on track toward $1.5T for companies in the Standard & Poor's 500, which, if attained, would be a historic high. [View news story]
