    Certain institutions can not invest into companies that violate their core values. For example a union pension fund might not be allowed to invest into companies that score poorly on employee rights and working conditions. A fund managing money for an Islamic institution would not be allowed to invest into alcohol companies or other "sin stocks."

    I respectively disagree. While few things in business or in life can be predicted without looking into the past, reputable ESG analysis aims to improve performance by looking at the past behavior of a company before a major disaster. For example a company with poor labor relations which is one of the areas that ESG looks at will have a harder time retaining and hiring qualified workers, will have a tougher time building brand value and might likely face serious litigation risk. With proper research the ESG score of such a firm will be low before any major company event takes place.
