Stock Portfolio Adjustments for Global Warming and Rising Sea Levels [View article]
I am interested in this issue of how the investment community will respond to the issue of global warming. The scientific consensus is in favor of a human signature on climate. While I am not taking anything away from this issue--it could easily turn out to be paramount for a range of industries and all of society--I take a more tempered view. Among the risks that investors face in the next 10-20 years, I would say that rising sea levels are *maybe* in the top ten. I do like companies that are being proactive about climate change--and I invest in a number of them (not to say that anyone else should):
but frankly the record of all long-term forecasters--whether they are scientists or economists is pretty dismal. I worked on climate change related issues way back when I did my Ph.D. in atmospheric science, by the way, and this issue is of considerable interest.
