    Nothing ever changes.

  • Philly Fed Business Outlook [View news story]
The Philly Fed has turned into a volatility index. Wild swings happen every month. It is a shame that a once important data point has become worthless. I now look to the Dallas Fed number to judge economic health.

  • Goldman beats despite trading slowdown [View news story]
A beat of dramatically lowered estimates doesn't change the fact that Goldman had a very bad quarter.

  • Morgan Stanley beats by $0.09, beats on revenue [View news story]
Is this as good as it gets for MS? They are still linked heavily to the European periphery. If 2011 was d-day for that, now has to be something approximating the best case scenario. I would expect the old Euro boogeyman to become a drag again sometime soon.

  • JPMorgan Chase misses by $0.11, misses on revenues [View news story]
Ok? They are also a company whose profitable segments are being attacked by the government (and possibly shuttered) with traditional banking activities in the toilet (mortgage origination is down 20% YoY!). The banking quarter won't be great and for the TBTF crowd any correction in the market will only make it worse.

Buy those bonds and gold, safe haven time. We are due for the sell off to spread out from the momentum names.

  • CBS taps Colbert to replace Letterman [View news story]
Letterman has been terrible for 10 years. Colbert can't be any worse but that isn't exactly a ringing endorsement.

  • Treasury yields fall along with stocks [View news story]
Too many people were short at the end of the year. Provided kindling for a reversal in trend. That kindling could turn to jet fuel if it attracts so momentum traders and a hedge fund or two blow up.

I think those gains are back.

  • Ally earns a Buy rating from BTIG's Palmer [View news story]
You know...I respect sales people just "doing their job" so to speak. In most cases there isn't much difference between your product and a competitor's. Success is how you pitch it. Then there are the sales people who will do the job and float a turd to people. Calling GMAC a buy is a flat out lie. It never will be a buy. Mark Palmer is behaving unethically.

  • Alcoa +4% as earnings top estimates, seeks to cut exposure to market swings [View news story]
They are an aluminum company that loses money making aluminum...why you'd want to own this stock is beyond me.

  • Stock futures little changed as earnings season kicks off [View news story]
Priced in? The stocks getting crushed don't rely on earnings to move. No one was buying Facebook, Twitter and Tesla because of their money making capabilities. Companies like GE, Cisco, Intel, HP, Microsoft, and the banks which have been moving higher seem ripe for a correction on bad earnings related to a slowdown (even if if it temporary). Bad earnings are not priced in.

  • 192K jobs gain in March about inline [View news story]
Good enough to continue the taper. The momo stocks should continue to get smashed. The question now is whether that will bleed over to the large cap names or not.

So much for the weather bump. Another bad employment data point as well...we'll probably have a boffo number tomorrow.

  • Reuters/UofM Consumer Sentiment at 80.0 [View news story]
Conference Board beat so this one had to miss. It almost seems that the data is more of a game to manage the markets than it is a conveyance of facts. Markets need to desperately get green for the quarter so I doubt this will matter much today.
