  • German Blue-Chips Are Increasing Dividend Payouts [View article]
I have no idea. I only hold US stocks in my Roth IRA account and all foreign stocks are in my regular brokerage account. Sorry, cannot help further.

Just call and ask them why the rate was higher? Ask them if they file the paperwork with German ADR sponsor and/or the tax authorities to get you a lower rate of taxation.

Where do you hold the IRA? It often depends on the broker and whether they file the paperwork with the German authorities or not.

  • Tesla's Growth Is Exciting [View article]
I am newcomer and don't know much about Tesla (no positions and no opinions on the stock). I want to know what is so great about Tesla? Did they invent something new? Do they have some new technology? Or is it primarily little things that they have done better to create a nice electric sports car?

I am not looking at points related to the company or stock (e.g., no union, faster concept to production, streamline supply chain etc.). I am looking to understand their technological innovations.

    Thanks in advance.

  • 4 Select Dividend Increases Of Note [View article]
Thanks. I personally find that the stocks and the market are too high for my comfort levels. I am sitting on the sidelines for last 6+ months and unfortunately losing out. Obviously, this wasn't a smart thing to do but I just can't get around to buying stocks earlier at 52-week high and now at all-time highs.

The only stock I bought for dividends was Apple when it was $430. If the market goes up another 3-5% then I will sell 15-25% of my holdings and wait for a substantial dip before reinvesting.

    Thanks for the article.

Are you concerned about the high dividend payout ratio? Any visibility into EPS growth beyond 2013? How about 2014 and 2015?

Thanks for the great article. Can you please discuss the difference between the Foreign share on the Stockholm exchange and the pink sheets ADR (TLNSY)? What are the key things for an investor to keep in mind while deciding which one to buy.

    Thanks!

  • My Dividend-Focused Portfolio: Past, Present, Future [View article]
I have a Scottrade account and pay $7 per trade. My typical trade is in the range of $1200-$2500 so $7 is not that bad. I am hoping that going forward my trades are in the range of $1800-$3000 so the transaction cost as a percentage of the trade amount reduces even further.

I bought all of these in 2008 but sold MMM, LEG, ITW in the last six months. I will buy them again if the market comes down. I also like LECO, PH and SNHY.

  • 6 Solid Swiss Stocks For Total Returns [View article]
It is a bit complicated (of course, anything with IRS seems to be). The first limit is easily reached for quite a few investors. This limit is for claiming credit right on Form 1040. For those over, you file Form 1116.

Then the credit cannot be more than one's taxes due. So for example, if all you did was invest in foreign dividend stocks and paid between 10% to 35% to the foreign government, then at tax filing time, you may find that you don't owe taxes because you didn't have a regular income and/or capital gains or own business. Now the foreign tax credit that you want to claim wouldn't translate into a refund. You can take it off dollar-for-dollar against your other taxes. I have a regular job so don't have this issue. My regular taxes are at least 100 times the foreign taxes deducted.

I continue to have 10 limit order for various foreign stocks. They are so infrequently traded that perhaps one day somebody would need access to their money and sell at my dirt-cheap limit buy price :-) Or there might be a fat-finger syndrome and someone will sell at $60 stock for $40, as an example!!

Hi Rober, I mostly agree with you and know that you invest largely (if not fully) via retirement accounts. I buy mostly in regular brokerage accounts so can claim all foreign taxes paid. For me, Swiss companies offer a lot of value and potential and diversification. My favorites remain:

Nestle (still waiting for a good entry point)
ABB (bought some and will buy more if it falls)
STMicro (I believe that their dividend is safe and EPS will improve)
Novartis (I sold mine at recent highs and will re-enter if it falls)
ACE (I may buy for total returns in future)

You are correct. Different investors have reported different numbers for Switzerland. It primarily depends on your broker - if they filed papers with the Swiss agents or not to prove that you are a US resident or not etc. Hopefully you can reclaim it when you file federal taxes on 1040 via Form 1116.

  • What Makes International Dividend Investing Attractive Right Now [View article]
Why invest in BP at all with all the litigation concerns?

One needs to look at earnings potential very carefully before investing. Dividends and dividend growth comes entirely from earnings per share. It would be great to hear why these company offer good earnings per share growth compared to others in the segment, e.g., like Statoil or Total or Eni.
