  • In order to help settle their bitter patent dispute, Motorola Mobility (GOOG) is proposing Microsoft (MSFT) pay it a $0.50 royalty for every copy of Windows containing Motorola's H.264 video encoding tech, in exchange for Motorola paying a $0.33 royalty on every smartphone it ships that supports Microsoft's ActiveSync software. Microsoft has dismissed the offer, and suggests Motorola is obligated to license its patents under FRAND terms. ITC injunctions (I, II) may be pending.  [View news story]
What a total waste of time and money for these two giants, only to make the lawyers' wallets fatter. Just call it even and forget about this nonsense.

Sometimes the engineers are just too smart for their own good in the stock market. One step ahead of the market, you win. Two steps, you lose.

The upgrading part is especially true for people who have yet to make a purchase. Why buying something obsolete 3 months from now, instead of waiting for 3 months? This is different from willing to take the *annual* upgrading cycle for most smartphones.

There is no such thing as Windows Phone 8.

There is a version of Windows 8 called Windows RT. A white horse is a horse after all. If you want to pick on an article with a different view from yours, choose something more meaningful the next time.

  • Has Microsoft Just Leapfrogged Apple? [View article]
Mind you, Microsoft has been the innovator in opening up the OS for developers to write applications. Apple has just recently learned the trick -- Mac sucked partly because of lack of compatibility and applications.

It is amazing how forgetable Apple fans are.

Microsoft was late in creating a graphic based OS, yet it won in that market.
Microsoft was late entering the game console market, now it's the King in that market.
Microsoft wasn't the first to create Office software -- I believe IBM did it earlier -- yet Office is now #1.
Microsoft isn't the first to create a new generation tablet. We shall see what happens.

Microsoft is an extremely good copycat.

Windows based PC's kicked Mac's butt and almost killed Apple.
Xbox 360 is now the #1 game console.
Surface to become the #1 tablet in 2013?

So what's wrong with being a copycat?

Operating loss = burning cash. It is happening now, and will last at least another quarter. If it lasts until the end of this year, RIM = RIP.

  • It's Tough To Be A Google Shareholder [View article]
@googlvr I don't think Wall Street can sink a big powerful company like Google. If its business is booming and its shares are cheap, even the most hateful capitalist will buy it.

What Google did with the split allows Page, Brin, and Schmidt to sell billions of dollar worth of non-voting shares (half their holding value to be exact) without losing any voting power. If this is not corruption, I don't know what is.

  • My Take On Marathon Oil [View article]
MRO appears cheap. But my experience is to stay away from companies that spend a lot of money to acquire oil fields when oil price is high -- the money will never get into the pockets of investors. 2% yield is just average among oil companies.

  • Hewlett-Packard: Ready To Double [View article]
I agree with the comments above that there is no compelling reason to buy HP, even at this lowered price. HP's main problem is it's still a hardware company, with 2/3 of the business in printing, server, and PC. Printing is a mature cash cow likely already in its early declining stage. PC is just a boring sector with razor thin margin. Both are business trends, not much HP could do. HP's transition into a service company has not been very successful. Meg Whitman so far has not shown anything real in turning HP around.
