Even smartphones are maturing, at least for the high end products. The upgrades from iPhone 4 to 4S is really not worthwhile, even from 3GS is a bit questionable.

I think s/he meant Microsoft has become an integrated software and hardware provider, just like Apple.
The difference is, if the arm twisting works and HPDellLenovo are able to create something amazing soon, Microsoft wouldn't have a problem giving up the hardware part.
Microsoft May Have Just Hurt Lumia 900 Sales [View article]
@Luke
I want to make two small points:
1. It may not make much difference to people who already have a Lumia 900. To people who are interested but have yet to make the purchase, however, a pending new product+software always stop some people from buying now. Usually there are enough people to make a difference on the company's earning record.
2. Given the small market size of WP7, I don't expect much developer support at all after WP8 is out.

It's not that different. Both appear as channel conflicts. Costco is downstream channel member, and its store brands conflict with its branded suppliers. Microsoft is an upstream channel member. By offering hardware, it now conflicts with OEMs.
The company has to be powerful to do this. Costco can do it. Microsoft can do it. Google can perhaps do it.

Well, this is a bit similar to a store brand at Costco is of high quality and low price, forcing Costco's branded suppliers to yield on wholesale prices. The suppliers may not be happy, but Costco will benefit at the end of the day. In the case of Microsoft, it certainly has that power.
IMO, PC maufacturers, in particular HP and Dell should be ashamed of themselves for not being able to even copy a decent product three years after iPad came to the market.
