    Dear Ben Gee,

    The reason to the log export tax was to increase domestic processing and employment in the forest industry, and subsidize the wood raw-material costs by preventing competition from international forest companies. It has not worked.

    Hello Too...
    Not only companies exporting to China are impacted by the increased trade. When log exports go up in the US, Canada, New Zealand etc, domestic markets and companies are also impacted.

    Russia is in the process of applying to WTO and the Nordic countries are fighting to make sure EU will put in their veto unless the log export tax is reduced dramatically. It is likely to happen towards the end of 2011. At that time we can expect to see more logs exported to Europe. Shipments to Asia, particularly China, may also increase in the future but that might further into the future.
