  • Falling Rig Count Could Cause Natural Gas Production Decline [View article]
Rig count has now fallen by 25%. After a lag of a few more weeks natural gas production will plateau. If the rig count falls further, as expected, natural gas production will rollover and enter a decline.

Clever! The problem with spell-check is it doesn't catch a mistake if the letters correctly spell another word.

I meant "rout," but it has provided a route to opportunity.

Rig count dropped another 43 in the latest report. Down almost 200 rigs in 3 weeks. Probably still need another 300 rigs to drop before natural gas production rolls over.

Most Marcellus drillers are not getting $3. But there is a big backlog of wells not hooked up to pipe due to capacity export constraints.

  • EXCO Resources Plans To Tap Oil In Buda Formation [View article]
The Buda seems to remain a statistical play. But the winners are definitely paying for the losers. More importantly, in the sweet spot there have been no dry holes.

The Eagle Ford is believed to be the source rock for oil for both the Buda and the Austin Chalk. My thinking is there must be a lot of oil in the Eagle Ford for there to be so much oil in the Buda and the Austin Chalk in the Booth-Tortuga area.

They have some hedges for 2015. The real question with their debt is how long does oil stay in the $50 range and how long does natural gas stay in the $3 range? If this is the picture in 2016 and 2017 they and whole lot of other companies with debt are in real trouble. If the prices pop back up they should be OK.

I'm sticking with safer low debt oil stocks like USEG and MCF for now. I'm interested in companies with debt levels that are less than 50% of trailing 12 months revenues, and that is proving hard to find. Both USEG and MCF have debt levels that are less than 20% of trailing 12 month revenues.
