  • Breaking It Down: Sears Holdings' 2Q 2014 Earnings Call [View article]
    Thanks for the comment.

I think B) and C) are likely to happen (or be announced) over the next quarter or two. Whenever a company mentions "strategic alternatives" for a division (such as Sears Auto) it is usually followed by a sale or spin-off announcement within a year.

It's one of the easiest levers that they can pull to down-size the business and also partly addresses the real-estate issue.

This might be the kind of project Icahn wants to get his hand in, but he seems pretty busy lately.

  • Can Transocean Drill For Its High Yield In These Murky Waters? [View article]
With respect to your news section, Transocean is going to spin off its North Sea drilling assets into a separate company in a few months, so I don't see how the tax changes would hurt Transocean.

  • YRC Worldwide Reviewing Options After Unsuccessful MOU Vote [View article]
I'm pretty surprised that the vote failed by such a wide margin. Without the MOU, refinancing is going to be a very hard sell.

  • YRC Worldwide Will Probably Survive, But Can It Thrive? [View article]
Well, they just announced an equity offering for up to 3 million shares (about $24 million at current prices). That doesn't seem like much, but it may be just enough for them to muster the cash to pay off their maturity in February and keep them afloat for another quarter while they negotiate their other debt.

  • Newmont Mining beats by $0.11, misses on revenue [View news story]
It was clear that their revenue would suffer, but I'm actually pretty impressed by their ability to cut costs and essentially "play defense" in what has been a challenging year for Gold.

  • YRC Worldwide Companies YRC Freight, Holland, Reddaway and New Penn Receive U.S. EPA SmartWay Excellence Award [View article]
The company is burning through cash and doesn't generate enough income from its operations to service its interest. According to the company's most recent balance sheet 10-Q, YRCW has:

    $173 million in cash
    $52.8 million available under Term A Facility @ 8.5%

    $70 million due in 2014 (referred to as "6% notes" @ 6%)
    $146.1 million due 2015 ("Series A Notes" @ 10%)
    $62.1 million due 2015 ("Series B" Notes @ 10%)

$278 million in debt, $225.8 million in cash and available borrowings. Additionally, the company has consistently had negative cash flow for the past several years, and is unable to generate operating income greater than its interest payments.

The company needs to refinance its Series A and B notes (and its stated that they intend to do so in the 10-Q), but is already paying 10% interest on them -- No bondholders is going to take less than that in a refinancing, and the company will continue to be buried in interest payments.
