  • 8 Takeover Rumors Smart Money Is Betting On [View article]
    Honest mistake.

The point of the article isn't "Akamai is a bad company, you should sell it immediately".

The point of the article is "the decline in Akamai's price is making it a takeover target, maybe you should consider buying it, some hedge funds are bullish about it"

  • 10 Stocks That Are 'Enormously Owned' by Hedge Funds [View article]
We have been publishing a weekly article pointing to stocks with significant insider purchases for the past 5 weeks. There are still a lot of insider purchases and the sell/buy ratio is nowhere near 100.

Other hedge fund buying don't necessarily mean the prices will go up immediately. Most hedge funds imitate each other, you don't really need original research. All you need to do is to pick the right stocks other hedge funds are buying.

When we said "follow the news" we didn't mean "buy the stocks Barron's or Cramer recommend". What we mean is situations like the Gulf oil spill where there is a lot of panic and divergence of opinion.

No. That's not what we are suggesting.

Markets create various opportunities for various reasons. It may be wiser to monkey those who know most about their field.

Actually you are correct about most fund managers. The problem is there are some fund managers who are extremely talented. They have access to better information and experts which help them beat the market even after accounting for their expenses and fees.

We believe it is possible to imitate some of these fund managers and beat the market. That's why we follow them.

Their stock picks from Q3 filings performed even better.

  • Louis Navellier's New Stock Picks [View article]
    Archman Investor,

We don't need to know what Navellier has done very recently. But we need to show that we can outperform the market by imitating his (and other smart investors') stock picks with a 2-month delay. We tested this using a 10-year hedge fund holdings database and found that we actually did even better than the fund managers (our research director has a Ph.D. in this field). Read the details:

    http://bit.ly/OdwO3y

How is this possible? If hedge funds are early in buying stocks (i.e. they are trying to catch a falling knife), the delay in imitating their positions actually benefits us because we buy them at lower prices. It is also possible that hedge funds are early in selling their positions. They sell at lower prices and we get to sell at higher prices because we get the information with a 45-day delay.

We aren't telling people to invest with these fund managers and make them rich. We are telling people not to waste their money, and imitate these fund managers' best stock picks. For details about our investment strategy, please visit our website.

  • 11 Dividend Boosters For Strong Income [View article]
Tobacco companies are low risk businesses with high barriers to entry (thanks to all the regulation, there is really low competition). Tobacco companies were also able to pass through all costs to consumers (a.k.a. "victims"). For some reason these stocks trade at very low multiples.

That's why tobacco stocks are good investments. I don't think there are other industries with similar attractive characteristics. Even if there were, you would be better off by investing in all of these industries for diversification purposes.

  • 15 High Dividend Stocks With Sustainable Payments [View article]
I would be very careful about companies yielding north of 10%. I want to be in companies that can increase their dividends and sustain them for many decades. I usually do not go for closed end funds but if you can get them at a large discount to NAV, then they might be attractive investments.

We actually do know whether these hedge funds have puts or calls on these stocks. We excluded those hedge funds with put options on these names. So there are 93 hedge funds with MSFT positions and these 93 hedge funds don't have any MSFT put options.

    Thanks!

Financial ratios are easy to use and easy to understand, but they won't tell the whole story about a company. You can use them as the first step in your search for the best stock for your needs.

We don't promise anything, do your due diligence, make your own decisions.

  • Most Popular Energy Stocks Among Hedge Fund Stocks [View article]
Did you read the first paragraph of the article? We just answered your question:

"Even with the delay, we've developed investing strategies based on 13F activity, which can be extremely profitable; for example, the most popular small-cap stocks among hedge funds produced an excess return of 18 percentage points per year over a 10-year period (see the list of these stocks and their returns since September)."
