You are quite right. All asset classes have been correlated to the downside. I talked about this on my blog (livingoffdividends.com.../).
While UDN is a good idea, the one issue with inverse ETFs is that sometimes they aren't perfectly correlated and you might not make as much money as if you had been long the same basket of currencies. I'd be interested to see how it compares to the basket over the long term - might be a good pair-trade!

I'd expect a better analysis from someone which a PHD. and I'd expect them to recalibrate the current CPI to 30 years ago.
And maybe even an explanation of how the world's inflation has been running at 5-7% for past several years and the USD has been devaluing and the US's inflation is still 2-3% under the world's inflation level. Now that's real magic!!!!
a bear call spread doesn't sound too risky to me. especially if you've been investing for 50 years and have seen all the different aspects in the market.
