  • Is Dodd-Frank a dud? Ten months after Pres. Obama signed Dodd-Frank into law, regulators have missed all 26 of their rule-making deadlines. The bill has proven a boon for lobbyists, creating the need for 387 rules involving 20 separate agencies, all mired in haggling over each minute detail.  [View news story]
more regulation to increase the cost of providing service to the end user - all for no real benefit...why isn't lobbying illegal in this country?

It's a crime to bribe foreign government officials, but it okay to "lobby" congressmen or give them insider information so they trade using it.

  • Warren Buffett Bought Lubrizol on the Cheap [View article]
    Great analysis.

On the other hand, Buffett bought it for 20x Free Cash Flow. That's pretty fairly valued.

I think the non-US exposure and growth opportunities are key here.

  • Cisco vs. Netflix, Value vs. Growth - Which Should You Own? [View article]
Can't believe the amount of negative response this post has generated! Tim, you obviously did something right ;-)

I bought VOD last year based on the same P/FCF argument and it's performed extremely well.

Apart from the usual suspects like CSCO, INTC, MSFT, WMT are there any other candidates you'll like to share? Maybe MO, XOM, BP?

    Great article, Tim!

Do you have a threshold for P/FCF in order to invest in a company?

  • 5 Predictions for 2011 [View article]
you're probably right. but as they say, it's hard to make any predictions, especially about the future ;-)

even if gold drops to a $1000, it's long term upward trend will still be upheld. but like you said, it probably won't drop that far.

  • How Safe Is Verizon's Dividend? [View article]
Verizon Wireless (VZW) borrowed money from Verizon Communications (VZ). It is paying this money back which is being used to pay dividends. Once VZW has repaid the debt, there is concern that VZ may not have enough money to pay current levels of dividends.

While I haven't looked at VZ, I'm pretty sure that VOD's dividends will jump once it starts getting dividends from VZW.

  • 5 Stable Companies Yielding Juicy Dividends [View article]
look at VOD instead of VZ. It yields 6.5% and owns 45% of VZ wireless.

also, what is BP's cost for the oil cleanup? I wouldn't be surprised if they had to cut the dividend because it cost them over $500 million in cleanup costs.
