I'm currently in my last year of medical school in Houston, Texas. I previously worked as an analyst in Dallas. I have read a number of books about value investing, growth investing, speculating, and trading. I currently engage in value investing where I see undeniable value and a margin of safety and speculation in rare situations where I detect a self-reinforcing trend.
In my value investments, I have no particular edge other than the sheer amount of research I am willing to do to verify my thesis. I begin by analyzing financial statements, follow up by constructing a viable story for why the company is selling at a discount to its intrinsic value and end with researching whether there is an upcoming catalyst. I mostly use valuation frameworks from Ben Graham, Peter Lynch, and Seth Klarman, supplemented with occasional special situations investments inspired by Joel Greenblatt's writing.
In my speculative positions, I seek companies or currency positions where I sense a major catalyst or fundamental misunderstanding will fuel a self-reinforcing boom of positive perception and strengthening fundamentals. I then attempt to buy ahead of the crowd, sell into the strong demand, and short when the perception cracks. I regard my edge in this style of investment to be a framework for interpreting events that I have borrowed from George Soros's book, the Alchemy of Finance.
I am currently finishing up medical school in Houston, Tx. I realized that with an unsustainable rate of increasing healthcare costs, massive changes had to be made in the healthcare system. I am working towards better understanding modern healthcare in order to play a part in the changes to the current paradigm of healthcare in America.
