As the legislative director for the National Veterans Committee on Constitutional Affairs (NVCCA), my role is helping coordinate the activists in states that are battling against the "unfunded mandate" of federal Real ID. Mennonites at the table with the ACLU??? -- what hath Washington wrought with this one!

I would recommend that investors be a bit cautious with L-1. Our allies are using the same military strategy that General Powell stated as the goal in Gulf War 1: "First we are going to cut it off, then we are going to kill it."

In the case of Pennsylvania, where L-1/Viisage has a $45.5 million contract with PennDOT for these turbo-charged biometric driver's licenses, we are "cutting it off" at the budget level -- aggressively working Appropriations Committee members to CANCEL THE CONTRACT. Taking the face-prints of millions of law abiding citizens just to catch a miniscule number that might have more than one license is turing the 4th Amendment on its ear. And the citizens know it! The "kill it" component comes with bills like SB 1220 -- that would prohibit compromising (putting in a database) the biometric information of the citizenry. Such is pending in PA, with a majority of the committee holding the bill being co-sponsors.

We are actively enlightening the appropriations & other committee folk in every possible state (Real ID defeated in a solid handful already, more coming soon), as we punch holes in the technology logic. If a number of these contracts get cancelled, the value of your shares of stock will plummet.

Because people like George Tenet and Admiral James Loy sit on L-1's directors, it has made it MUCH easier for us to show the conflicts of interest (using government positions to push for Real ID, then profiting in the corporate world) and true FASCISM of the M/I complex run amok.

Yes, the public has been a bit slow to catch on, and catch up, but don't be fooled. The only time the word "security" is used in the Constitution is in the context of making the public secure FROM its own government (4th Amendment). Veterans didn't fight Nazi Germany so that "may I see your papers, please?" could come home to roost here.

We're in this for the long haul.]]>
