  • Tracking Seth Klarman's Baupost Group Holdings - Q2 2014 Update [View article]
    Hi Amerc96,

Please notice that NCQ is a minutely small position. Also, it is not new - Klarman acquired this a while back as a result of the spinoff of NCQ from NG.

    All the best,
    John.

  • Tracking Carl Icahn's Portfolio - Q2 2014 Update [View article]
    Hello,

A reader (Thank you Boxerboy) informed me that Icahn's Family Dollar stake and Seventy Seven energy (NYSE:SSE) stakes are missing in my report.

Icahn's Family Dollar (NYSE:FDO) stake is flat-out missing from the 13F for some reason. The latest on this is a 13D filing on July 29, 2014. He has cut his original 9.4% of the business stake purchased at around $58 per share to a 6% of the business stake. The selling happened at an average price of around $75.50.

The latest 13D on SSE shows him holding 9.98% of the business (4,746,421 shares) - this is what he would have received from the spin-off (ratio 14:1).

    All the best,
    John.

  • Tracking Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Portfolio - Q2 2014 Update [View article]
SA editors received feedback that CHTR, a new stake is not mentioned as such in the article. Just a clarification that the article focuses on the larger positions and that is why it is not listed under the "New Stakes" section and the Summary Spreadsheet. CHTR is mentioned in the last section where the smaller (less than 0.5% of the portfolio each) positions are listed.

    All the best,
    John.

    Hi evan.prospect,

For some reason, I saw the activity in this comment stream only today.

I will also pick RYN over PCL. On a strict value basis, I think PCH is another pick to consider and would probably come out ahead - but, I do not know enough about the business to make a call.

    All the best,
    John.

  • Dow Chemical: An Activist Investor Play And More [View article]
    Hi Northport Investments,

    Nice read - Thank you.

Regarding Third Point's Dow position, do you have a link to the release that states the position is $1.3B. I am a little confused because their Q4 2013 letter says it is their largest position. But, the 13F only shows $351M (7.225M shares) - see http://1.usa.gov/1s78wL3 .

    Regards,
    John.

  • Suncor Energy: Evaluation After A Messy Quarter [View article]
    Hi Kenny,

    Good work - Thank you.

Minor spelling correction - it should be "word" not "world" in the following line: "Suncor is still a good name to own and I would not change a single world in the paragraph I wrote in my April article."

    Regards,
    John.

    Hi On Base,

    Thank you for your comment.

The overall performance is not published and is meaningless anyway as they make investments based on specific client objectives. See http://bit.ly/1zp28C5 . But, we do know he is very good as his Forbes picks have outperformed the S&P 500 Index in the vast majority of years.

    All the best,
    John.

  • Weyerhaeuser Will Likely Increase Its Dividend In 2014 [View article]
    Hi Zvi,

    Nice work - Thank you.

I recently did a comparative analysis (see http://bit.ly/1nA8tX5) of WY with RYN & PCL and came to similar conclusions as you: WY is undervalued and has room for dividend growth.

It is very unlikely that WY will combine its non-core businesses with RYAM as RYAM is further up the value-chain. A spin-off of those businesses to turn WY into a pure timber REIT is more probable.

    All the best,
    John.

  • Anoro Ellipta cleared in Japan [View news story]
    Hi Cheriac,

TBPH was spun out of THRX last month. TBPH is an early stage biotech that will have an 85% economic interest in the programs partnered with Glaxo that are still in research phase (Phase II and below drugs in the pipeline).

THRX is now a royalty business that will get royalties from Glaxo for a couple of drugs that have blockbuster potential: RELVAR®/BREO® ELLIPTA® ("Relvar/Breo") and ANORO™ ELLIPTA™. There is also a third drug called Vibativ (FDA-approved injectible antibiotic to treat patients with hospital-acquired and ventilator associated bacterial pneumonia) and they will also have a 15% economic interest in TBPH's programs.

Management have said that TBPH is similar to THRX of a few years ago. The business structure of new THRX is some what similar to PDLI and that is something you could look at.

    All the best,
    John.

  • Chesapeake's Oil Services Spin-Off Has A Lot Of Upside Potential [View article]
    Great work - Thank you!

Could you please indicate where you got management's capex guidance for 2014 and 2015 from? - I read what appears to be conflicting information in form 10-12B filed on 6/9/2014 and hence the question. Ex-99.1 page 12 (http://1.usa.gov/1mbmwS9) says the following: "We currently expect to spend approximately $450 million in aggregate growth capital expenditures in 2014 and 2015"

    Regards,
    John.

    Hi ragwink,

IEP regulatory filings (10Q, 10K, etc.) and investor presentations have them. I will make a note of mentioning the traded securities he holds outside of 13Fs in my report.

    All the best,
    John.
