Would love to see a follow-up article that substitutes WFC with either BAC or C.

Nice to look at WFC. But what about all those long time buy and hold shareholders of lets say......(BAC) and (C). ??? Not pretty. Sometimes cut and run is the better option than hope.

  • Retirement Strategy: ETF Only Portfolio Vs. Buy The Dips Portfolio - The Results Are Crystal Clear [View article]
The cherry picked ETF portfolio I posted above has about the same 2013 income as your portfolio - $513 versus $516 for yours. It can be done.

To each his own. Thoses are nice stocks. Your ETF portfolio is not what I would have picked - too much overlap, little REIT exposure, etc.

It boils down to portfolio make up, concentration, and risk. Risk can be a headline that comes out that can decimate one of 17 stock holdings. Again, to each his own.

Speaking of short time frames here's the above portfolios 2013 performance with the approximate weightings:

Here's a cherry picked ETF portfolio and performance for 2013:

Which in conclusion - proves nothing because 1 year let alone 7 months is trivial.

Wonder how it did during 2013's 2nd half taper tantrum ? Both stocks and bonds went down. Sometimes bonds are not a safe haven.

Anticipation of recession and tight money poilicy kill bull markets. Neither of which are here. The rest is largely....just noise. In the meantime watch the yield curve and enjoy the bull.

Thank you, I agree they were selected form a broad contrarian view.
    Thanks again for writing.

    Contrarian:
"One who takes a contrary view or action, especially an investor who makes decisions that contradict prevailing wisdom, as in buying securities that are unpopular at the time."
