Valuing RIM: Stop Guessing And Look At The Phone
I need to do more research into the new Nokia phones but my gut feeling is they do not compete directly against each other. I would use the analogy that RIM is like a Range Rover. They were great cars but were overtaken by competitors left and right. However, the day they started to produce decent cars again, people who could afford it jumped on it. Apple and Samsung would be Audis and BMWs, yes, they are great if not the best cars but imagine you meet your friends and they all have either the same model of a Beamer or an Audi.
Everyone of a certain age had a Nokia in its days as we all had some cheap old car (let's say Chevy). Would you rather buy a high end Chevy or a Range Rover? That does not exlude success with consumers who just want to have a reasonable phone at a decent price, in or outside the US. My mother should not have wasted money on an iphone that she does not really uses. So in a nutshell, at least over the next few years they will both survive but RIM will be Number 3 in the higher end market and probably keeps a fair share in developing countries that are addicted to BBM. Nokia will at the same time grow in the middle segment but might have problems with margins that come with that.
