I suspect that SVU will be bankrupt within 18 months. Declining sales, immense debt, and competition from retailers - Walmart and Target - in addition to the other grocery chains is intense.

Long SVU is risky to say the least.

"The anticipated gains from open trade harkens back to an economist’s first lessons—specialization and exchange. Let each nation do more of what it does best, and international trade will raise productivity and living standards everywhere."

Neoclassical bullshit. Stopped reading after that.

It's science. Global warming is real. The problem with the "appeal to authority" reply is the same as if I were teaching you calculus and you said, "No that's not right. And I replied "Newton, Leibniz."

That said, there is not the political will to deal with global warming.

We will burn the coal until it is gone or until declining supplies make other technologies less cost prohibitive.

    Buy coal.

  • Western Digital, Seagate Technologies: Questioning the Outlook of the Hard Disk Industry [View article]
WDC has entered the consumer side of the SSD market. They did so in March of this year. Given the history of the company - taking market share from a competitor, for example - I see no reason why, especially given its cash position, WDC could not eventually compete as hard drives are replaced by SSD.

None of us have a crystal ball. All I know for sure is that WDC has little debt, lots of cash, a low P/E, a solid business, and growth prospects moving forward. I bought at 28 and again at 26 and change.

  • While long-term damage from the BP spill is "unknowable" only three months after the blowout, it looks increasingly like the "greater environmental catastrophe in U.S. history" talk was exaggerated. Or is it a government cover-up?  [View news story]
    4300 assumes gross negligence.

Still less than 20B total even if GN can be proven, which will be quite hard if not impossible.

Around 1200 per barrel is the far more likely fine amount, with the real fight over exactly how many barrels were spilled.

About 1 in 7 shares is held by UK pension funds. That's why Cameron ran over to the US to talk to Obama. The US govt. won't litigate or fine BP out of existence. The US Senate, where 60 votes are needed for a senator to scratch his ass, isn't up to the task.

    WDC

Started buying at 28. Will buy all the way down. Hopefully next year I won't be in the street yelling, "Rags, bottles, bottles, rags..."

WDC is sitting on that cash (over 2 billion), with very little debt (around 400 million). They have more money earmarked for stock repurchase (446 million, I think) than debt. Their margins are well above 10%. Both P/E and BV to price look good.

They missed earnings and lowered expectations, and the market is hammering them for it.

Looks like a good value. Only time will tell.
