  • Who Will Win the Hepatitis C Market? [View article]
As I said, this list is not exhaustive. But Medivir and partner Tibotec have a good shot at approval for TMC435 around 2014, if the phase III goes well

As in an above comment, depends on what contingencies are in the approval. Also depends on the overall market environment. If it is a clean one, and the markets are rallying anyway, $40 is possible.

Interesting approach. A good one too.

The stock appreciation of approval, if that is what happens, depends a lot on labeling restrictions, additional studies, etc. If they give a clear approval, it will pop at least 5 - 7 dollars/share.

    Michael,
That is not just with this stock, but with most stocks. Gives you the gist of where option writers think the stock(s) is/are headed.

No, I leave such dumb approaches to folks like you. My approach is to benefit from a significant move up or down, while decreasing risk.

  • Incyte Pharmaceuticals’ JAK: Just Another Kinase? [View article]
No, not Portola. See my message to John above - it's called IMC biotechnology.

It's IMC Biotechnology. No web page yet, alas. We have Syk inhibitors, oral TNF antagonists, etc. Focussed mainly on inflammation, oncology, and ID.

    Two comments Jason:
    1. "The top selling drug, Humira, priced at $13,000 during its launch in 2003, is projected to reach sales of $13.7 billion in 2016, placing it solidy as the world’s best selling drug. One reason for its success- of all the anti-TNF drugs, it is the only one that can be self-administered."

Enbrel is also self administered. But I'm sure you knew that.

    2. "INCB28050, CP690550, together with Syk kinase inhibitor, R788, from Rigel/AstraZeneca make up the trifecta of oral compounds knocking on the door of the rheumatoid arthritis/autoimmune disorder market- one currently held firm by anti-TNF therapies"

That is not the trifecta - my biotech company also has a Syk kinase that is better than Rigels.

  • Is the U.S. Headed the Way of Japan? [View article]
In contrast to the above comment,
    1. US is not facing a demographic time bomb, unlike Japan
    2. US does not have the rich worlds worst deficit (as % of GDP), unlike Japan (does not matter if the debt is external or internal, ultimately you have to pay it).
    3. US has lots of natural resources, unlike Japan
    4. US politicians are, hard to believe, better than Japans. Can you imagine Ozawa challenging PM Kan? Would be like Rod Blago. challenging Obama to the democratic nomination.
    5. Despite recent problems, US still has among the worlds most flexible labor market, unlike Japan.

  • Amgen's Hopes for Prolia Go Beyond Osteoporosis Therapy [View article]
A new, patented formulation of Zoledronic Acid has been developed that is better than Zol in POC clinical trials. It has the potential to give Prolia a run for its money, especially since it will be cheaper, as effective, and with less side effects (especially ONJ).

There is one bright spot for biotechs: the health care bill. See my blog at SA (the editors at SA, in their infinite wisdom, refuse to publish it)

  • Human Genome Sciences: Tests Raise Questions About New Lupus Drug [View article]
I did not mention the conference call since I did not participate in it, and without an official company statement on the matter, didn't want to get into "second hand information".

Regarding off label use, remember that in trials, Benlysta was given ON THE BACKGROUND OF STANDARD OF CARE. So if it is given the way you suggest, who knows what the efficacy will be (or safety for that matter).
