jbzw: Yes, I think you're right. Preferreds give us good return in this market with a risk profile somewhere between bonds and stocks. Thanks for your comment.

Kotzker: Thanks for your comments. You seem to have already established an excellent discipline for regular saving. You have some good names. The only thing I would add is that when younger you can allocate a good portion of your portfolio to areas with growth but minimal yield, for example energy. I think we have tremendous growth ahead in the US for energy development. Stick with your discipline.

djohnsonhot: Thanks for your perspective. Seems like you have a sound strategy. I do occasionally use cash secured puts and covered calls when it makes sense. These are low risk strategies that can provide a little extra income. Good luck going forward.

kalendjay: Thanks for your insight. I think your reasoning regarding real estate investing is sound. It's a definite long term, buy and hold type of investment. The cycles in real estate can be quite long. Good luck with your plan.

jova99: Yes, what you refer to are marginal rates. Certainly, taxing dividends at personal rates would be unwelcome, however, MLP's would not be impacted and my objective is the stay under the federal personal income 15% threshold. Thanks for your comments.

gdli44: Very sound reasoning. I think the FED just told us that NLY is good to stick with for the near term. Thanks for your comments.

DargAlpha: 1) MLP's would not be impacted, otherwise we would have to adjust. However, my objective is to stay under the 15% federal personal income threshold, so minimal impact. 2) Yes, many have options and I have used covered calls occasionally.

coreed: I don't know the average holding period off-hand. As noted, MCD is a long time holding. I've also held MO for a few years and when I received the PM spinoff, I bought more. I have made changes over the past couple of years but I'm not a trader, just fine tuning. Yes, the ETFs and preferred are a proxy for fixed income. Thanks for your interest.

dallas: Thank you for your comment and ideas. Perhaps I'm not understanding completely, but you refer to my withdrawal rate of 6.37% of original principal. The 6.37% represents the current yield of my holdings. Therefore, the only withdrawals are the result of cash distributions from my holdings, no principal. Naturally, the value of the holdings will change daily with asset price gyrations but that does not impact the amount of income. I appreciate hearing about your experience.

sapuch: You seem to have a nice plan in the works. Indeed, tax code changes are an issue but when that happens, we'll have to find ways to adjust.

dreadlordnaf: You are wise. I agree. I wish I had come to that level of understanding in my 30's. In fact, during our first year of retirement, we spent about 8 months traveling throughout Latin America and South America. We visited lots of places and made it work on $50 to $60 per day, all in for the two of us. We will be returning for more extensive stays. Thanks for your comment and insight.

Stocklvr: Thank you. Yes, I'm only one year into income harvesting but I feel positive about the approach. It's not a set and forget strategy, however. Periodic adjustments may be needed.
