Thanks chowder, if you are interested that is enough for me to be interested. I read the book Sam Walton wrote while he was still alive, he did a heck of a job.

Thanks for the comment Craig, I have taken brief looks at the miners as they all appear cheap, RIO is my favorite. The thing I can't get my arms around is how tied to China they all seem to be. Headline reads China is slowing, the miners are sold. Headline reads China heats up, miners are bought. Analyzing what the long term trend for the miners is difficult, at least for me.

Thanks for the comment PendragonY. I recently wrote an article on CNI, which is on the top of my watch list, despite its relatively small dividend. In the article I stated what I thought the downside is in an effort to get people to think about it, in any future stock specific articles I intend to do the same. You are correct, without thinking about the downside, you do not know the risk reward ratio.

Thanks for the comment Brodidliy, I also looked into OHI and HTA, but like Ventas a little more. Still looking for some price drop in medical REIT sector.

Thanks for the comment DD and thanks for the link, that will be useful. "Real' share buybacks are useful. While on the subject of buybacks, last night I was checking out Wells Fargo and during the 4th quarter conference call, an analyst asked management about the $4 billion they spent on buybacks, without any share reduction, management said it was to cover employee performance awards. I was disappointed in that and WFC moved to the bottom of my watch list.. Chowder is right, many share buybacks are a waste, but if done right they can be rewarding to.

Hi Chowder, thanks for reading and commenting. Given a choice I would take dividends, but when done right, I do think buybacks can add value. As I said, I track the share count and in the case of XOM I have seen the share count drop. Most technology companies are notorious for buying back shares only to re-issue as stock options to the employees, so I am aware the buybacks are often misused. I do agree, that nothing beats cash!

Thanks for the comment fschew and I enjoyed the additional information you provided.

I actually track the share count of stocks I buy, XOM had over 5 billion shares when I purchased it, it now has approximately 4.5 billion. Have to keep in mind they re-issued some shares when they bought XTO. I have heard some investors complain about stock buy backs, but I think they are useful. I wrote an article on XOM where i broke down how their shre buy back would greatly improve EPS over a 5-year time frame.

I am diversified, I have an investment account at work that has five-times the amount of money than my brokerage account does. That account is split between an S&P 500 fund, Small Cap Fund and an International Fund. Over time the small-cap fund has performed the best. In the brokerage account XOM and MCD are my largest positions, both a little over 20% of the portfolio.

I will wait for the right pitch, I have no intention of overpaying and while I wait more cash piles up, not a bad thing.

Thanks for the comment JWG, hopefully I own something long enough that the dividend exceeds the basis price. I do remember when Archie was participating in the roundtable, I don't remember the story, but I do remember him. Dividends are a wonderful thing.

LOL, right you are BigislandBum, never enough cash and that is a problem I cannot solve. I am not a rich guy so building cash takes some time, but the important point is to make the best you of what cash you have and that is done by not overpaying. Thanks for the comment.
