  • Why Is There So Much Confusion About Total Return Investing? [View article]
I'm not trying to convince anyone to stop doing anything. I'm just involved in education and a little myth busting.

But I am trying to convince people to read one or two of the books on the list above. I think financial education is a good thing.

Spend a little time and/or money with one of those books...it will be an investment that will generate many dividends.

    best of luck

Your brokerage statement for your personal investments does...that's why it lists portfolio value change in value, current yield , gain or loss vs cost and total return....and not "yield on cost"

    have a great day

    thanks for your insightful comment

They know that bonds and stocks are inversely correlated..."
INCORRECT should be ""bonds and stocks WERE inversely correlated..."

    thanks for your comment

you might want to review your data. One place to check is the correlation calculator at etfreplay.com
use AGG the aggregate bond index

yes but why so happy today

Are you a closet holder of low/no dividend paying stocks ?
BAC, JPM.CITI, GS all up 6%+
    aapl +3%

That would put IYF with its "I wouldn't touch it toolow dividend of 1.4%
    at +13.2% ytd total return

Or did you make money because you collected premium on the call options you sold that went deep in the money ?

They understand the calculation on yield on cost, they just find it perplexing that it is never mentioned in the books cited or used in any SEC or GAAP approved metrics for reporting performance.

And $200,000 invested in AAPl in 2002 would be worth $9,000,000 with nod dividend?
And 2000,000 invested in BAC (div grower at the time) in 2000 would be worth $68,000
And $200,000 invested in GE definitely a div champ at the time would be worrh $136,000

This is called analysis by anecdote. Mr.and Mrs. Total Return and i prefer analysis by data...as in the books cited above.

Of course the top stock pickers and market times among the dividend growth folk would have gotten rid of all their financials well before 2008....and everyone I know is an above average driver.

Although its hard for me to imagine that a dividend growth investor wouldn't have owned plenty of financials in 1983
