Explosion At Neptune's Manufacturing Facility Leaves Shares Halted

Much of the biotech investing community was left shocked following news reports about the death of two employees after an explosion and fire at the Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada plant operated by Neptune Technologies and Bioresources NASDAQ: NEPT) (TSX-V:NTB).

CTVNews.ca was among the first to report via video that another 19 people were injured, four with severe burns.

It is at this manufacturing facility where Neptune manufactures its famous Krill oil products. Earlier this year, the company announced that it was planning an expansion at the plant that would substantially increase production capacity to 300 metric tonnes by the fourth quarter of fiscal 2013, and then to 500 metric tonnes by Q4, 2014.

Shares of Neptune, which were halted at 2:37 p.m. EST on Thursday and it is higly likely that they will remain halted all day Friday unless NASDAQ officials decide otherwise.

One would assume that as a publicly traded company that Neptune is well insured, with both business interruption insurance, and liability insurance. They will need that since there are reports that the existing, 150,000kg, in-production part of the plant may be destroyed. Gaetan Drouin, a local fire chief said "Just looking at the damage to the building you can see it was probably very violent."

Last month, Neptune closed a $34.1-million public offering, selling 7,318,000 shares at $4.10 each. Approximately $5-million from that raise was set aside to finance the expansion of the plant.

Neptune management has extended their most sincere condolences to the victims' families and friends.

"As soon as we were notified of the situation, we made our way to Sherbrooke" said Michel Chartrand, Neptune's chief operating officer. "Upon our arrival, we began working with emergency services to understand what caused this incident. We will continue to closely collaborate with them for as long as it is necessary. We want to understand what happened."

It would be perfectly logical to assume that we will see some volatility in Neptune trading as investors hear confirmation of these and many other details from officials who are investigating the aftermath.

Our own thoughts and prayers go out to those killed and injured in the explosion, and their families.

Can Pozen's Positive Results Run Continue?

Shares of Pozen Inc. (POZN), a developer of novel pharmacologic agents primarily for pain and pain-related conditions, have been rising since the firm reported positive results from two Phase 3 clinical trials of PA32540, a coordinated-delivery tablet of immediate-release omeprazole and delayed release aspirin.

We wondered if shares would continue higher based on fundamentals and new upcoming catalysts and it now appears the markets not only appreciate these fundamental developments, but may actually realize that there is still value to be realized here.

Even as the overall markets have seen sessions with sizeable losses this past week, Pozen's shares have been showing strength. Technically, however, we may be getting ready for some healthy consolidation.

In January, when shares were trading near the $4 level, we told readers that Pozen's management team was extra focused and driven to perform well for its investors. We continue to believe this, particularly since the more Pozen's CEO is able to create shareholder value, the more he will personally ensure his own compensation and benefits as the firm's largest investor. If only every publicly traded company had that type of accountability set in place.

The Chapel Hill, North Carolina based firm said the newly release information from the studies is essential to progress their drug candidate's (PA32540) partnership discussions in the United States, and that it will allow them to continue to move forward with preparations for a third quarter NDA submission with the FDA.

John R. Plachetka, Pharm.D., the Company's Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer responded to some of our questions regarding the key news developments.

His answers regarding the PA32540 Phase 3 results are compiled below:

What do you feel investors need to know now about this news from a POZEN perspective?

John R. Plachetka, President and CEO: These positive Phase 3 results for PA32540 are critical in moving forward with our preparations for a third quarter New Drug Application submission (NDA) as well as progressing our PA32540 partnership discussions. PA32540 is a component of our pipeline of cost-effective, integrated aspirin therapies that are designed to enable the full power of aspirin by reducing its gastrointestinal damage with the potential to benefit the millions of Americans who use aspirin for cardiovascular disease prevention.

What is the market potential for a therapy like PA32540?

John R. Plachetka, President and CEO: Our preliminary forecasts suggest a substantial market opportunity for PA32540. While the cardiovascular disease benefits of aspirin are well established, the use of aspirin is associated with risk of gastrointestinal bleeding in certain patients. Low-dose aspirin, even at doses of 75 mg, is associated with a significant risk for developing serious gastrointestinal complications such as bleeding.

· 25 percent discontinue or reduce their aspirin use due to gastrointestinal side effects

· Low-dose aspirin discontinuation leads to three times increased risk of potentially fatal cardiovascular event

· Serious ulcer complications are about two to four fold higher in patients taking daily aspirin

What's next for PA32540?

John R. Plachetka, President and CEO: These data will be included in the PA32540 NDA, which we plan to submit in the third quarter of this year. If approved, we expect PA32540 to launch in the United States in late 2013 or early 2014. The full Phase 3 data will be presented at a future medical meeting. In addition to the NDA filing and potential launch of PA32540, we also are focusing on securing the right strategic licensing partnership deal for PA32540 in the United States by the end of this year.

POZEN is focused on the following therapeutic areas that include: migraine, arthritis, cardiovascular, other therapeutic areas. The company's product portfolio includes: Treximet® (sumatriptan and naproxen sodium) for the acute treatment of migraine attacks, with or without aura, in adults; VIMOVO(TM) (naproxen and esomeprazole magnesium) for the relief of signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis (OA), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and to decrease the risk of developing gastric ulcers in patients at risk of developing NSAID associated gastric ulcers; and PA32540 for the secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease.

IntelGenX CEO Says Output Of Attractive, High-value Products Will Ensure Significant And Growing Profits

Shares of IntelGenX Corporation (OTCBB: IGXT) were trading just under $.50 per share last November. That was the first time we told our readers the relatively under-followed story a micro-cap biotech with a pending FDA decision that could become a game changer for the company focused on improving existing medications by incorporating proprietary, advanced controlled-release technologies.

Not long after our coverage, IntelGenx announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration had indeed approved IntelGenx' lead product, CPI-300, for patients with Depressive Disorder. CPI-300 is a high-strength formulation of Bupropion hydrochloride (HCl), the active ingredient in Wellbutrin XL. CPI-300 is the only single dose 450 mg formulation of Bupropion HCl approved by the FDA. The stock eventually hit $.74 and they have since announced a co-development and commercialization agreement with Par Pharmaceutical (NYSE:[[PRX]] and exclusive agreement with Edgemont Pharmaceuticals, LLC (Edgemont) for the commercialization of IntelGenx' lead product CPI-300 in the United States (U.S.). Under the terms of the agreement, Edgemont obtained certain exclusive rights to market and sell CPI-300 in the U.S. In exchange, IntelGenx recieved a $1.0 million upfront payment and launch related milestones totalling up to $4.0 million and will be eligible for additional milestones upon achieving certain sales and exclusivity targets of up to a further $23.5 million.

In several ways, the company has now been greatly de-risked for investors, yet shares are once again trading near the bottom half of a technical trading pattern (-54.25 % from the stock's 52 week high of $1.00) which appears to keep share prices within a clearly defined price channel and therefore call attention to us as both a good short and long term trade.

Dr. Horst G. Zerbe is the Chief Executive Officer and President of IntelGenx and has more than 20 years experience in the pharmaceutical industry. Prior to founding the company, he served as the president of Smartrix Technologies Inc. in Montreal, and as Vice President of R&D at LTS Lohmann Therapy Systems in West Caldwell, NJ. He holds over 40 patents in drug delivery related fields and has published numerous scientific papers in recognized journals.

We caught up with Dr. Zerbe to find out if investors are missing something when it comes to understanding a company with several strong drug candidates in their pipeline with planned launches in the not too distant future.

BioMedReports: A lot has happened at IntelGenx since we last spoke early in November, perhaps give us a quick recap of the past months for the company.

Dr. Horst G. Zerbe: A lot has indeed happened since we last spoke. In mid-November IntelGenx received full and unconditional approval for our lead product CPI-300, a high dose Bupropion XL product for the treatment of major depressive disorder. This approval makes CPI-300 the only single tablet high dose Bupropion XL product available on the U.S, market. We then announced last month that we entered into a licensing agreement with Edgemont Pharmaceuticals for the commercialization of CPI-300. We anticipate the product will be launched by Edgemont this summer.
In addition to all our CPI-300 news, we also announced in December that we signed a co-development and licensing agreement with Par Pharmaceuticals. While the company has the contractual obligation not to disclose any technical details regarding the project, such as drug, technology, sales potential, nor to disclose any terms of the deal, we believe that this product, once on the market, has the potential to become one of the biggest revenue generators for the company.

BioMedReports: Why did you choose to license CPI-300 to Edgemont Pharmaceuticals?

Dr. Horst G. Zerbe: We had serious negotiations with several interested companies, both specialty pharma and generic companies, and we had several attractive term sheets on the table. We felt that Edgemont's terms were very attractive and offered us the best overall opportunity to maximize the potential of CPI-300. The financial terms of Edgemont's offer included $5 million in signing and launch related milestone payments, $23.5 million of sales and exclusivity related milestone payments, and a tiered double-digit royalty on net sales. Moreover, we were very impressed by the determination and experience of Edgemont's management. The CEO and founder, Doug Saltel, used to be in charge of Novartis' $2.3bn neurology business in Europe and has an impressive track record of successful product launches in the neurology space. Edgemont is focusing on the neurology market and has just launched a high dose Prozac product. Finally, the company is solidly financed and backed by an experienced board which, amongst others, includes two former Kos executives.

BioMedReports: Now that you have a commercial partner in place, when do you think CPI-300 will be launched?

Dr. Horst G. Zerbe: Launch preparations are well underway at our contract manufacturer, Pillar5, and are on track for a July 2012 product launch.

BioMedReports: Edgemont has a board member, Dr. Robert Zerbe, is he of any relation to you?

Dr. Horst G. Zerbe: That question has been asked a few times. I would like to emphasize that I am not related to Dr. Robert Zerbe. By sheer coincidence, I met him once in the mid-nineties at a joint FDA/AAPS event where I presented and he attended as a regular symposium attendee. He briefly introduced himself to me and that is the only contact we ever had.

BioMedReports: With CPI-300 licensed and soon to be launched, what pipeline products should investors be focused on?

Dr. Horst G. Zerbe: The next product that will be ready for FDA submission is our migraine film. We just completed the manufacturing of the pivotal batches and will start the pivotal bioequivalency study in April. Assuming a positive outcome of the study, the 505(b)(2)NDA will be submitted in Q1/2013.

We are also making very good progress with our erectile dysfunction film. The product will be scaled up in Q3, 2012 and we expect to file the 505(b)(2) NDA application in the second half of 2013.

Our antihypertensive tablet, which involves our VersaTab technology, is currently in the manufacturing scale up phase, and we expect to submit the ANDA in 2013.

Finally, our buprenorphine/THC combination for the treatment of various pain indications is well advanced. We are in negotiations with potential partners for a development and licensing deal, and anticipate that Phase II clinical testing could commence as early as the fourth quarter of 2012.

BioMedReports: Why was there such minimal information provided on the Par Pharmaceuticals collaboration?

Dr. Horst G. Zerbe: The cooperation with Par is for a generic product. A critical parameter for a generic company to be first to file an ANDA is to be extremely protective of any and all technical and business information that might allow their competitors to speculate on the product they are working on. That is the reason why Par asked us not to disclose any technical and business details in our press release. Par has an impressive track record of being first to file. In fact, they have the highest success rate of all generic companies in the US for being the first to file an ANDA.

BioMedReports: How strong is the company financially?

Dr. Horst G. Zerbe: Our balance sheet is very strong. We currently have more than $4 million cash on hand with no debt on the books, and we expect further cash inflows from the CPI-300 deal in 2012, as well as from other deals that we are currently negotiating.

BioMedReports: What are the biggest challenges ahead for the company?

Dr. Horst G. Zerbe: I see two challenges; On the technical side, we need to gain full control over our supply chain. Our intellectual property and technical know-how is our strongest asset and we must make certain that we have full control over who can access our manufacturing technology. We plan to address this within the next 12 to 18 months.

On the corporate side, we need to improve the flow of information to investors, both institutional and - even more importantly - retail investors. We have noticed that retail investors receive very little information about the company, its deal flow, financial situation, etc. which causes uncertainty and results in a lot of selling, particularly and ironically often on the announcement of good news. We have identified the problem and are working on solutions to fix it.

BioMedReports: As we look at 2012, what are some of the key milestones and news items that investors should be looking out for?

Dr. Horst G. Zerbe: Although not in chronological order, the upcoming key milestones are the launch of CPI-300 in a few months' time; the announcement of a commercialization agreement for our erectile dysfunction film; the announcement of a development cooperation for our pain product involving our mucoadhesive tablet technology, and the announcement of a co-development and licensing deal for our oral films for animal health applications.

BioMedReports: What is the one key value driver that you hope investors understand about IGXT?

Dr. Horst G. Zerbe: This has always been, and will continue to be, our strong product pipeline. We currently have 11 active development programs in place, most of them involving a 505(b)(2) regulatory strategy. This means that the products are sufficiently de-risked and have a high probability of making it to the market. We are therefore expecting a continuous output of attractive, high-value products to the market that will ensure significant and growing profits over the coming years.

Week's Big Healthcare Conferences Provide Important Inside Glimpse for Investors

It's time to pay close attention as healthcare sector companies are out to educate and try to lure investors at two of the year's key investment conferences. For healthcare/biotech investors there are few stages on which to catch, meet and ask questions of biotech leaders bigger than this week's Rodman & Renshaw 13th Annual Healthcare Conference, Sept 11-13 at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel and the 2011 Morgan Stanley Global Healthcare Conference at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York.

Paying close attention at what some of these companies have to say at these conferences is not only urgently important, but during volatile times like these, crucial.

As one of Wall Street's senior quantitative analysts said this week, "It's getting harder and harder to be a stock picker in this market. It seems stock fundamentals are taking a back seat to the latest Fed speech, jobs report, news from Europe or policy proposal, depending on the day. So, maybe we should all become macroeconomists?" The fact is, a vast majority of stocks move in the same direction as the market the last- with some percentage of those stocks as high as 94-95% in the past week.

To put this into perspective, Quantitative Analyst Rocky White points out that "during the 1980s, the percentage of stocks moving with the market on a daily basis was typically only in the 40s or 50s, and peaked in the 60s during the 1987 crash. The percentage was consistently in the 50s during the tech boom, and then rose pretty significantly when the tech bubble burst. Since then, this metric has remained at a higher level. During this most recent pullback, the number shot higher, reaching just above 80%. Prior to this, the only previous time the percentage jumped this high was at the peak of the 2008 crash".

Why even try to find good picks in markets like these, when about 90% of stocks are moving in the same direction?

It's more important than ever to pay attention to trends and make them your friends. You have to learn to read the technical indicators, find bottoms and buy stocks on some of the pull-backs that we're seeing in the markets.

Big cap stocks are bearish. Some of those firms, particularly with operations in places like Europe where debt finances are in even bigger trouble than they are here, may have nowhere to go but down. Historically, times like these see some of the best performances from emerging company stocks.

As we've seen in some of the small-cap healthcare markets this week, there are plenty of undervalued emerging companies whose stocks can climb once analysts flag them and/or insiders start buying at suddenly cheap prices. You want to look for those. You want to minimize risk and start finding companies that may be on the verge of- or have already started- generating more revenues; are anticipating good news/catalysts and which appear to be growing- particularly during difficult financial times while others are down-sizing, not meeting goals, etc.

In healthcare, you want to find companies with technologies that not only measure up, but realistically have a chance at capturing a nice percentage of their particular market. In some cases, these companies may have the better mouse trap, but take a hard look at how difficult it might be for the market to actually adopt that new technology?

Companies who show up at these conferences are there to convince you that they are the horse to bet on. Spend time looking at the presentations, check the facts and your gut before jumping in. Even if you can't make it to the conferences, most of these companies put up materials and videos from their presentations on their home pages. Go out of your way to look for them.

Schaeffer's Investment Research which actively tracks options activity points out that "there has been a 15% increase in short interest since March, although both short interest and panic levels is still far from the peaks seen during the financial crisis." Cautious crowds are growing, but as White points out, "the technical backdrop is not as supportive to them as it has been in the past." If you're off the sidelines and still trading biotech and healthcare "be open to buying stocks that you like on pullbacks to support, as 'pops' can be equally as sharp as 'drops' in the current environment."

We saw some of those principals at work last week after calling bottom on the overly punished shares of Cleveland Biolabs (Nasdaq:CBLI) and featuring first-look reports about Ampio Phamacetuicals (Nasdaq:AMPE). Both of those stocks were big winners for our readers this past week.

We will certainly continue to pay close attention to SANUWAVE Health, Inc. (OTCBB:SNWV) at the conference. Since finishing and submitting stacks of data from their double-blind Phase III clinical trials of their dermaPACE® device for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers, Rodman will provide that firm the first opportunity to speak to a large group of investors, brokers and analysts about their pending FDA decision. The firm is still undervalued with plenty of cash in the bank. More importantly, some analysts are starting to notice that may be well positioned for a buy-out given the threat their disruptive medical device poses to industry leaders in the multi-billion dollar wound healing space.

Are you still upbeat about RPC? nothing seems to be going on for them lately..

Two days ago, as part of our research for an upcoming report we had a long chat over coffee with one of the major note (debt) holders that RPC was supposedly going to have to file banruptcy because of. The gentleman was very pragmatic in telling us that the investment group he is part of all feels good about several very positive things that are continuing to develop at RPC and that his group is very close to working out a deal with the company which, in his words, "will reflect very favorably for the company and their shareholders." When I asked him to handicap that scenario and when it might happen he said "I'm 95% sure it will happen very shortly. Certainly long before the final meeting with the Amex takes place."

These people have single-handedly bet millions on RPC, and their technology and are very likely aware of certain developments- i.e partnerships, financial projections, that have not yet been made public so to hear those comments was interesting, but certainly not any different from what we have been hearing from other sources about this "incredibly bleak" situation.

We also thought one of his comments were interesting given today's tabloid article. He said: "If the SEC or Amex had even the slightest hint that anything was suspicious or iffy about the company they would have shut them down already. This is a major U.S. exchange and we know they put the company through the paces during their hearing. We also know that RPC showed up very well prepared and had some big guns on their side; including that SEC investigator who was able to present some overwhelmingly strong evidence in favor of Radient."

Developing, but the tabloids have obvisouly made some progress which is impressive given that no one will even speak to them given their reputation. We've now gone from "the India order is completely bogus and the the distributor is made up" to "the Indian distributor has financial difficulties." Nice!

The company is scheduled to make a presentation at ASCO.
