  • Medtronic Checkup for a Long Investment, Part II [View article]
    Thanks!
I have done an analysis of JNJ (available on my site) and I agree - really like them! I've given a quick look at BDX and will look deeper into them as they seemed quite attractive.
    Cheers,
    Ben

    Hello infinitee,
Thank you for your comment. Yes there are a few clouds on the horizon, the main one being probably the HC reform. However even if the tax is being put on devices I think the potential uptick in volume could balance the loss. Overall there is some uncertainty over the market which probably drives depressed values but even the "worst case" on this front does not seem that bad.
In the mean time even if valuation does not recover rapidly, MDT pays a nice dividend and generates a lot of cash to buyback shares.
    Have a great weekend,
    Ben

    Hello iauixpr,
According to morningstar on a TTM basis it is slightly lower than for the full year 2009. Essentially sales seem to have been flat since 2008. Is that not the numbers you have?
    Thank you for your question,
    Ben

  • Why I'm Long General Dynamics: Robust Financial Metrics, Low Valuation [View article]
    Hello,
I have not yet looked into BA but will definitely add it to my list for review. I can't really say much about ETF's as I tend to be very micro in my analysis. Do you own BA and PPA?

    Hello Turbonium,
    Thank you for your comment.
In that case wouldn't you be better off shorting the entire sector or other players that are more at risk? For example (based on memory) isn't Lockheed much more leveraged for example?
    Cheers,
    Ben

  • A Good Pharma Pick: Novartis [View article]
    Hello CPA,
I did a stock review for both SNY and NVS and found NVS slightly more interesting. The main difference and driver of preference was a side by side comparison of ROE's and ROA's where NVS is doing much better than SNY.
I completely agree with you that it comes down to the robustness of the pipeline and it is my understanding that both SNY and NVS are among the best poisitioned in the big Pharma world.
    Thank you for your comment,
    Ben

    Hello Rapplix,
Thank you for your comment. What were the key elements in your analysis that made you see GD as a good investment idea?

    Hello Stan,
Thank you for your comment. It's true that the industry as a whole has been discounted based on fears of contraction of US spending. However GD's position is really at the core of Defense and it makes sense to me that they would be less hit than some of their competitors if that were to happen + their civil aircraft business can provide a good risk mitigation. In addition, GD has a stellar performance vs. most of its peers making it a good potential investment in my opinion.
Do you own other defense stocks?
    Cheers,
    Ben

    Hello the misanthrope,
Thank you for your comment. How long do you plan to hold SE? Are you not worried of the business volatility? Or maybe that's actually the reason why you bought it (i.e. wanted more cyclical exposure?)
    Cheers,
    Ben

  • Vulcan Materials: This Company's Not for Me [View article]
    Hello tell it your way,
I can't disagree with the cyclical nature here and the potential for an improvement once construction comes back...but at this point I am looking for steady long-term stocks which is why I am passing on VMC. Do you have any thoughts on what is needed in terms of new constructions for VMC to rebound?
    Thank you
