Here’s a scorecard of what’s been sold, and what’s still on the block:

In February, Nortel sold its data-switch business (part of of its Layer 4 to Layer 7 portfolio) to Israel’s Radware (RDWR) for $17.7-million. What will Canada’s high-tech sector be like without thousands of high-paying employees? What will life be like for thousands of pensioners whose benefits are shrinking or disappearing? How will Canada’s R&D activity be impacted?

Another interesting issue is whether Nortel’s demise will have a major effect on Canada’s start-up landscape. In Canada – and probably many countries around the world – one of the great offshoots has been Nortel employees who have left the fold to create their own start-ups. Armed with experience and expertise, these entrepreneurs have played a key role in fueling the start-up landscape, even though they might not get the attention that highlights their time with Nortel.

It is important to keep in mind that while the pension payments seem high, it’s probably not out of line with pensions given to CEOs who had worked for many other Fortune 500 companies.

Mike Zafirovski: Originally, Mike Z. was entitled to a “special lifetime annual pension benefit” of $500,000 that would kick in upon his termination as CEO, or after five years. In 2007, Zafirovski voluntarily requested the package be reduced to $355,000.

Complete Story »

Given what happened during the auctions for Nortel’s CDMA and enterprise assets, it’s entirely possible the optical and Ethernet assets could fetch $1-billion or more.

A key question will be how high Ciena is willing to go. With $455.7 million of cash and $607-million of short-term investments on its books, Ciena appears to have the financial flexibility to make a significantly higher bid.

In many respects, the beginning of the end for Nortel (NRTLQ.PK) happened a year ago when the company announced plans to sell its Metro Ethernet Network business – an asset many people considered to be Nortel’s crown jewel.

In theory, the plan was that MEN would pull in $1-billion to $2-billion, which would provide Nortel more financial flexibility so CEO Mike Z. could continue his restructuring plan. Unfortunately, the capital markets suddenly melted down, which caused spending on telecom equipment to decline, and valuations for telecom assets to drop.
