Do a bit of digging and check the prices of books from Amazon Marketplace (used or even new). They're often cheaper than the Kindle version.

Then, there's the little fact that you can't sell a Kindle book when you're through reading it. Buy a used book, read it, then sell it, even to your local used bookstore. Heck, you can even donate it and take part of the cost as a tax deduction.

I am not sure about the the kindle - but I can see the mentality - like the iPod -nothing you but a click wheel -and really Archos was miles ahread in terms of sound quality, etc. It's not like other products weren't out there comparitively better.

Guess they took a page out of microsoft -that way -poor product, better marketig and leveraging -and whaddya know -consumers loose and now pay for stuff they didn't and finally get the SQ they had in the beginning by the 'fourth' generation or later.

What a country -no wonder everyone is in debt.

Who Should Be the U.S.A. Chief Technology Officer? http://seekingalpha.com/article/100788-who-should-be-the-u-s-a-chief-technology-officer?source=feed#comment-287002 287002 Tue, 21 Oct 2008 10:05:59 -0400
A Jedi's strength flows from the Force. But beware the Dark Side. Anger, fear, and aggression; the Dark Side of the Force are they. Easily they flow, quick to join you in a fight.

Mr Bernanke said today: “With the economy likely to be weak for several quarters and with some risk of a protracted slowdown, consideration of a fiscal package by Congress at this juncture seems appropriate.” He added: "If the Congress proceeds with a fiscal package, it should consider including measures to help improve access to credit by consumers, home buyers, businesses and other borrowers. Such actions might be particularly effective at promoting economic growth and job creation...”

"Access to Credit!!!" Unba-fucking-real. These guys have absolutely no shame, not a moral or ethical cell in their malignant souls.

Give the stupid, ignorant mass of poor slobs money so that they'll feel OK about getting into MORE debt; give 'em that false sense of wealth---like the one "W" gave 'em with the $600 'stimulus' checks---so that they feel OK about getting 3 new credit cards and running up $7500 in debt and paying the minimum payment each month of $50 while NEVER, EVER getting close to getting out of debt. Debt servitude, for all of your days. Pay the man and make him rich.

Look folks, this has gotta stop. We cannot exist forever as the meat for the financial industries sausage grinder. There are many ways to get out from under this pile of shit, but one very straightforward method comes to mind first: stop playing.

Stop borrowing money from corrupt banks and stop paying money to a corrupt government. Don't pay your taxes, don't take out new mortgages, don't patronize the institutions that prop up this system. Live smaller---live in and for your community. Grow vegetables, trade with neighbors, share resources. Don't buy cool things anymore---you don't need them. One small TV is just fine...in fact, my wife and kids and I have chosen not to have TV in our home. We listen to the radio and occasionally watch M*A*S*H on an old DVD player. Don't buy into the need to buy into happiness. Ride a bike to work.

The Empire cannot make us go to THE DARK SIDE. We have a choice. The Dark Side exists on greed and excess and hubris. If we can learn how to live small, the forces of Evil will fall. They can only exist if we subsidize their existence. I say, no more!

Zillow Aims to Disrupt Lending Market With Its Mortgage Marketplace http://seekingalpha.com/article/71022-zillow-aims-to-disrupt-lending-market-with-its-mortgage-marketplace?source=feed#comment-276211 276211 Tue, 07 Oct 2008 17:30:52 -0400
Zillow, in fact, is not even remotely disruptive. To start with, they'd have to have accurate and reliable information in their system. And you can't automate comparables, especially when there is high market volatility or a transitional market (e.g. in-fill housing that is twice as expensive as neighboring homes). It also doesn't account for major changes, such as adding a second story, a complete gutting and renovation, tear down and replacement, or foreclosures which temporarily distort markets. If the information can't be relied on, there's no reason for buyers or sellers to go there. All it does is add friction to the process.

To be disruptive, a product or service or business model must address a real problem and serve an unmet or under-served market need. Zillow does none of these for the end consumer. At best, it provides a ballpark estimate of a home's value before I commit to talking to a realtor, but there are numerous other places I can also get that information.

Sorry, no disruption here.

Wondering if you do any analysis, or just read off the vendor's press release.]]>

Technology can present which service provider has excellent coverage at any given time and location, and perhaps can also present the cost per use, however it may slow down the use of services for "on-move" consumer who may be in different locations in any given day because of how the billing and customer service will be provided to consumer. Most important, how "handover" between these competing service providers will happen in order to maintain seemless connectivity?

As we see, all future communication will be IP-based (you may wish to read about LTE, the 3GPP2 standard), in my opinion, this Google idea of "Open Wireless World" is already in market within MESH network concept and the use of 3GPP2 LTE.]]>

200 million people of their own who speak Portuguese, and only a click away from 1 billion other Internet users around the world. Virtually no copyright enforcement at all. Of course, Goggle wants to be based out of there.

Next thing you know, you'll see the air strip, telescopes, and message rooms being constructed.

Anyone who owns digital content and has followed the evolution of Google's ongoing battles with copyright holders will understand this move completely and probably lose a little more sleep tonight.

Google has snookered us all once again. Those rocket scientists are a smart lot. Too bad they were apparently never taught anything about ethics out there at Stanford.

With any luck, the copyright legislation introduced in the U.S. Senate a few weeks back will pass quickly, and the first four countries to get a resident copyright enforcement agency will be the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, and China). If not, copyright holders may want to start looking at some other way to earn a living.

If you don't believe me, try stopping a company based in Brazil that is distributing pirated goods over the Internet. I highly recommend that you don't waste your money by trying to get any of the Brazilian government agencies involved. Good luck!

So tell me, copyright owners, what exactly are we going to do now?

Apple underestimated the pent up demand for the iPhone and found themselves having to handle 5 times the number of start ups, plus a new network. as good as they are, this was temporarily more than even they could manage.

but they're fast learners and the difference between apple and microsoft is that apple actually fixes things, making them better.. and they won't take 7 years either!

as an investor who prefers to buy and hold, this is a good stock, with tons of growth potential and is a financially secure, innovative, highly profitable company. ]]>

I put up a lot of pictures on Gallery (part of MobileMe you never hear about). That works great, I am getting so many compliments on it from family and friends. You have coverflow and quicklook features, and it behaves in a browser much as it does as a Mac app, which is pretty incredible. It is working with web standards, doesn't work in I.E. (naturally) and is really amazing, as is calendar, in that they work VERY much like iLife apps.

This is going to work, much of it has been working all along, it was just too much to roll out at one time.

MobileMe is a lot more than just email. But they will have the email working very well, just give it a little time. Not time as in 7-8 years (Microsoft sense of a little time), but as in a few weeks.

After all, Steve is beyond real when leading a product introduction (Not meaning only the stagecraft, but the years of development and production readiness before the stagecraft.).

Now, he needs to really GET the cloud's realities. When you screw up email and such, you've made a major, perhaps catastrophic 'dent' in someone's universe.

If the previous cloud leader was overconfident and pushed to launch on iPhone 3G day, he has to deal with the harsh reality of his mistake and the impact it made in many people's lives. (Apple's reputation is a secondary hit.)

Steve needs to get someone (perhaps Steve himself) to manage the cloud stuff as well as Steve manages the products.

It seems people, especially the media, are making this a bigger issue than it actually is. The impetus many refer to is- a rare blunder for Apple since it has a long standing reputation for quality and flawless products. The truth is that no firm/individual is immune to mistakes, and Apple has made many over the years. However, the crux of the issue is that Apple takes these matters very seriously and resolves problems quickly. That is the reason Apple enjoys a favorable reputation, any problem that arises is just a blip, that only a select few users and experience, and everyone forgets.

Other firms, such as MSFT, never fix all the problems. Just take a look at Vista. Or XP. Why does it freeze up so hard I have to yank the power cord out of the wall? Why does it constantly crash and have to be rebooted on a daily, if not hourly basis? And why does Windows take for ever to boot? These issues are not encountered with Mac OS, yet have been standard with Windows for years. That drives me nuts, I don't understand why MSFT can't develop an OS that is stable and doesn't fall apart after a year.

In my opinion, the significance of this event is Apple's commitment to rectify the issue and keep improving its products at a pace well ahead of its competitors. ]]>
