I like to think that I diversify my portfolio and investment approaches as well. There is a lot of noise out there and sometimes you don’t realize that you have underperformed until it is too late, etc.
The press release was broader than the S&P 500. I agree that the dividend growth was accidental, but certainly a pleasant surprise and the start of the idea for the article. However, it doesn’t end there as accidental; another point of the article was that I ( and S&P ) think that companies will continue to reward shareholders in the form of dividends. It has the potential to become much more than just a pleasant surprise with future dividend growth and diversification.
Incidentally, I don’t really feel like your example ( Go Giants!) works, but I understand what you were going for.
I feel like your taking the info about apple somewhat out of context, but you are completely right…It is not a dividend stock.

1. I think the main reason is diversification. 2. I would also mention that if you are like my friend and cannot invest in stocks in your company retirement acct, this seems like a good idea. 3. With all the statistics about how the majority of individual investors don’t beat the market, etc…this could be a way to be the market, use the same metrics and buy when it is cheap and hopefully sell when it is overvalued; I am talking longer term here. So, sell in 99 and buy on the way down in 08 and 9. Like I said…it is an idea that needs to be examined further.
Interesting thoughts. Your comment on financials in regards to indexing reminds me about the argument to shift from" market cap weighted" index to "equal weighted" to avoid bubbles. All of this certainly deserves further study.
I do not presume to speak for all DGI, but the great thing about our community here is that we acknowledge that there is no "one size fits all" approach. It depends on each investor, but some are involved in DGI solely for a growing revenue stream and others, like myself, also look for price appreciation/total return. I would recommend the articles by Chuck Carnevale for further reading on this
Also, even David Van Knapp, one of my favorite authors and a big proponent of a growing stream of revenue, acknowledges the need to sell at times. He has some great articles where he clearly outlines his investment thesis.
