  • Silver Bottom Likely Seen [View article]
True...but perhaps his fingers need a break after all that typing?
He writes well but with all due respect I'm not too sure there is as much substance as we may be led to believe. You also have to be careful of anyone that claims to have the "most successful publicly verifiable long-term track record...etc"). If you dig a bit under the hood that's debatable.
Silver might go up from here but it could also be a falling knife and in for another dip or two. The author , like everyone else, does not know.
I thought silver was fairly attractive earlier and it continued to get whacked. It's all speculation and anyone saying otherwise is usually just telling a good story...

  • Intel Stock: Getting Its Mojo Back [View article]
When we bought Intel earlier this year it was met with lots of yawning. We had INTC "take it all" in our 2013 March Madness Investing bracket too and while the year is still young...we couldn't be happier.

I think his point, or at least the part I agree with, was with regard to not being a fan of mutual funds. Why pay more for what typically underperforms?

    Thanks Murray,

I couldn't agree with you more! This piece was done just because in our practice we often come across several investors who seem to be convinced about owning certain mutual funds.
As a firm we rarely use any mutual funds for some of the very reasons you state but also due to lack of relative performance and fees/expenses. As a matter of fact, please click on the link in the first sentence of our last paragraph (in the Conclusion) for our take on most mutual funds.

    Thanks again for your comment.

  • S&P 500: Do Not Buy This Dip [View article]
You nailed it! People seem to have short memories and frothy markets inevitably catch some of the same folks multiple times.

  • Has Natural Gas Finally Hit Bottom? [View article]
Great question...and to be candid Clean Energy (CLNE) is not the only stock we like in natural gas; it just happens to be right around the corner from us and is truly positioning itself to be a market leader in this space. We'll dig more into this in future articles but Westport Innovations (WPRT) is another well covered stock that has potential.
One company that is also quite appealing is TravelCenters of America (TA). This may actually present the best near-term opportunity of the bunch for those investors who are not as patient.

The bottom line is this...there are a number of companies that will jockey for position but our take is that even though it's early...this is a play on "fuel of the future".

Agree...this will be a bumpy and long ride but for those who are patient I think the upside and the long-term story is there.

    Thanks for your comment

Jimvickery- Thanks for the comment and of course I've looked at charts going back that long....and even longer.
This article, however, was intended to bring up an actual and specific time period where I had clients asking to buy gold at all time-highs and I didn't opt for the old "yes sir" head nod.
Back to longer-term charts...like many I look at them but it's usually "rearview mirror" stuff. (per my point)
Take a look at Gold versus the S&P from 1973 to now...

Thanks Barry....and by the way...I wish you a happy retirement in advance!

We have liked KMP for quite some time and will continue to monitor and cover it. The one thing to keep in mind with this "bracket/exercise" though...is that the overall message is if you owned a bit of all that we suggest here you're likely to beat most investors.

Thanks for the feedback and follow. Yes...We will be posting the results from last year shortly ...

As for INTC...are you looking forwards or backwards? Our pick is not on how it's done but rather how we think it should do relative to others in the bracket. I couldn't agree with you more in that Intel has done zilch for a long while...but that's not what we're judging it on. We think it could outperform the broad market in 2013 and while we're waiting for it to do so we will enjoy a dividend of 4.26% (as of this writing)

Thanks for the good words. This a fun way for us to share some of our investing themes as well as specific holdings we like each year.
INTC is still licking some of its wounds but we definitely see upside and the healthy dividend sure helps while we wait.

They were last year! In our 2012 bracket we picked $CNI and they did well. Canadian National Railway was up 24.4% over 12 months relative to 10.6% for the S&P over that same time period.

We'll see how $ARNA does... I have to say...this could be one of those stocks that triples but so many investors are too scared to touch it. That's partly the appeal/risk of biotech in general but in this case the educated gamble is amplified.

We think it's worth nibbling at as part of the overall Small Cap asset class...
