How many hours streamed is irrelevant. That news could not possibly have been the catalyst for a 10% hike.

  • Groupon's Biggest Obstacle Is Merchant Retention [View article]
Competition is definitely a problem. I have highlighted companies like Living Social in my previous article http://seekingalpha.co... There are very few barriers to entry in this market. That doesn't necessarily mean Groupon will fail, but what it does is force it to reduce what it charges merchants and thus affects profit margins. That is not a good sign for a company that has registered a significant loss since its founding.

You make several valid points. I do believe though that the consumer will always be there if there is a deal to be had. You pose the question correctly: how do you issue that deal and still make it profitable and worthwhile for the merchant. The sales personnel at Groupon have their work cut out for them.

  • Groupon's Biggest Obstacle Is Merchant Retention [View article]
That is precisely my point. Unfortunately, Groupon is selling its service to these merchants as a legitimate long-term profit-making machine when for many it really isn't.

  • Groupon (GRPN) dives 7.4% to $19.10, below its IPO price of $20, after a survey of 400 merchants showed that 52% aren't planning to feature deals in the next six months. Another 24% only plan to carry one offer.  [View news story]

Thank you for your thoughtful input. However, your research does conflict with recent polls. I have attached a link to a Chicago Tribune article stating that more than half of a surveyed 400 Groupon merchants will not be running a deal in the next 6 months. Furthermore, an addition 24% were only going to run one deal in the same period. http://tinyurl.com/7gu... I do agree that the high costs of recruiting, training, and managing their salesforce will also be a great challenge to overcome.

Actually, I thought about that before posting the article but I saw nothing in the agreement between the merchant and Groupon that prevented the collection of this data. I have attached a link to the merchant account terms and conditions that each merchant must abide by: http://tinyurl.com/7pr.... While I totally understand what you're reason is for not purchasing groupons, I on the other hand find myself buying at least two per month. There are unbelievable deals to be had particularly in the automotive and food & beverage markets.

I wrote an article just yesterday (will be published soon) identifying this major problem. Groupon has no viable plan in place to assure merchant retention. They do not even report how many of the featured merchants in a given period used Groupon more than once. Red Flag!

I am very much upbeat about UA and have been so since 2009, but to say that the Micron G will compete with the Air Jordan is really stretching it. The Air Jordan has no competition. It is its own niche.

Brian, I am extremely bullish with regards to CAT. There should be notable gains heading into the Jan earnings report. However, you mentioned "short-term" gains. How long is short term and do yo not believe that CAT is a good holding long-term? As far as I can see, the China real estate disaster is the only true obstacle to CAT's global growth.
