  • The Hottest North American Shale Plays: Josh Young [View article]
Current issues aside, to me MHR is the best way to play the Marcellus/Utica. They're about to get another infusion of cash from selling the midstream assets, and the audit will be completed mid June. Its totally a speculative play due to the filing issues, but when the audit comes out clean, and the Utica test well results are out, this is an easy path to $10

  • Discrepancy In This Marcellus Stock Valuation - Highlighted By Overlooked Disclosure [View article]
Gastar doesn't have a ton of acreage in the liquids rich Marcellus, wouldnt it make sense for them to drill a few wells to make sure the acreage is held by production, then sell to a larger player?

  • MLPs And Interest Rates, How Right Is Mr. Gundlach? [View article]
The risk isnt the MLPs ability to continue to make interest payments if rates rise (unless the MLP has floating rate debt), I'd say the risk is more that as interest rates rise, the yields on MLPs will rise as well, meaning unit prices will have to fall.

  • The Obama administration approves ConocoPhillips-led (COP +0.3%) Freeport LNG as the second U.S. liquefaction project to gain federal approval to export chilled natural gas to countries without free trade agreements with the U.S. The decision is an important harbinger for the remaining 19 applications to export gas to non-FTA countries. [View news story]
These are def long term stories, but you've got to walk before you can run.

LNG operates on long term contracts, so I think its indifferent.

  • More on Tesla: The company announces it's offering 2.7M shares (current value of $244M) and $450M in convertible debt due 2018 in a public offering. Elon Musk plans to buy $100M worth of shares - $45M through the offering, $55M through a private placement. Tesla expects $830M in gross proceeds. TSLA now +6.8% AH. [View news story]
In 2012 BMW sold 1.5 million cars worldwide and reported earning before interest and tax of 8.3 billion euro. Ford sold 2.25 million cars. Tesla sold 4900. Lets wait a quarter or two before we compare the company to the global heavy weights.

This discussion aside, I think Tesla is light years ahead in terms of technology. The reason I dont own the stock is because I'd rather see them focus on technology and not on car design and sales. That being said, the stock is up huge. But being up big doesnt mean this company is Ford, Apple, Google, or anything else.

Ok, when I go to Google.com, and type something into the search bar, I do not have to pull out a credit card and pay Google for the results. When I go to a Tesla dealership, if I want to leave with a Tesla, I have to either give them $80,000, or sign up for a payment plan. Those are two very, very different things. Its not quibbling, they are different business models. Google does not directly bill the user, they advertise to the user, and sell the advertising space to companies who wish to advertise. Tesla sells cars.

I'm not questioning Tesla's sales, I'm questioning how many people in the world can afford an $80,000 car. Yes, the answer is more than 5,000, but its not the several million a year run rate that would be needed for the company to justify a market cap anywhere close to the size of Ford or GM

  • It's a nice bounce for the mortgage REITs (MORT +1.3%) today as a string of weak economic data leads to a big drop in Treasury yields, the 10-year off 6 bps to 1.88%. Leading gains is Western Asset Mortgage (WMC +3.3%) following yesterday's 8% post-earnings drubbing. CEO Jim Gavin took advantage, adding 12.8% to his stake by buying about $42K worth of stock at $19.96 each. Other movers include: (CMO +2.1%), (NLY +1.9%), (ARR +2.6%), (IVR +1.8%). [View news story]

Google is selling my views to other people. I, as a user, do not pay Google money to use its search feature. My point is comparing a car company to a search engine is a bad comparison, and sounds more like bubble talk than anything else.

  • The mortgage REIT sector (MORT -1%) continues under pressure, today led by Western Asset Mortgage (WMC -7.6%) as its book value blew up in Q1 thanks to portfolio losses. American Capital Agency (AGNC -1.5%) - which started the downturn when it reported losses 2 weeks ago - nears a 52-week low, Armour Residential (ARR -3.1%) hits one. One trader suggests Capstead Mortgage (CMO -1.4%) with a portfolio of mostly reset ARMs the least affected by rising rates. CYS Investments (CYS -0.7%) - trading at a 10% discount to book and also owning ARMs - is attractive as well. [View news story]
i agree, the company had a bad quarter, but the business model isnt broken. The dividend announcement in a few weeks will push $AGNC right back to $31.
