  • Coal India Studying Five Overseas Mine Acquisition
"Coal India Studying Five Overseas Mine Acquisition." Bloomberg (  Coal India's Chairman Partha Bhattacharyya stated that the company is evaluating the acquisition of five international coal sources, including a mine in Australia owned by Peabody Energy Corp (BTU/$58.68/Outperform) and a U.S. mine owned by Massey Energy (MEE/$49.60/Market Perform).  In four years, India - Asia's second largest energy consumer behind China - is expected to face annual coal demand which exceeds output by 100 million metric tons.  Coal India, which currently accounts for 82% of the country's coal production, plans to eliminate half of this deficit from overseas mines.

  • World's Largest Biodiesel Plant Starts Production in Singapore
"World's Largest Biodiesel Plant Starts Production in Singapore"
Though the U.S. biodiesel industry is in the midst of a painful period, the situation overseas can be quite different. Finland-based Neste Oil has begun production at the world's largest biodiesel plant. Located in Singapore, the plant has capacity of 800,000 tons per year and produces Neste's NExBTL diesel. The renewable diesel is produced by hydrogenating oil from plants or animal fats using a catalyst. The biodiesel can be blended with conventional fuel or used on its own. Carbon emissions from the fuel are 40-80% lower than conventional diesel depending on the blending level. Leveraging its experience with this plant, Neste Oil is constructing a similar facility in the Netherlands, which is expected to be completed in 2Q11.

  • Oil on Sudan's Troubled Waters
"Oil on Sudan's troubled waters" The Guardian
In January, voters in southern Sudan will decide whether or not to secede from the Khartoum-based government in the north. The fact that most of Sudan's oil production is concentrated in the south complicates the situation. Sudan currently produces approximately 500 MBbls/d of crude. However, the oil ministry believes that the dwindling reserves may only last for another decade, unless Total S.A. happens to make a large discovery at its concession. If the south ultimately secedes, the two countries could share oil revenue but a nasty altercation is also possible. Either way, the pending challenge for north and south will be to build a sound economy after the oil is depleted.
