  • Nobody Goes To McDonald's Anymore: It's Too Crowded [View article]
This article is bold, but appears to conflate MCD's mere scale with both strength and investor opportunity. Raising its dividend without a clear strategic plan and robust operational improvements will only weaken MCD further.

In his latest statements, MCD's CEO blamed the weather, competitors, the economy, input costs - absolutely everythig that just so happens to be outside his control! As an investor, I view that sort of denial as bad news.

  • (Un)Happiness At McDonald's? Outlook Not So Tasty In 2014 [View article]
Sadly, I have to agree with your general outlook. I fear that the rot may be deeper: Oak Brook may be paying too much attention to Wall Street, and not enough to the basics of running a restaurant business (especially keeping franchisees happy).

An enormously entertaining and instructive article! Thank you (But sad when you consider the good businesses that are starved for capital).

  • McDonald's: Recent Price Weakness May Present A Buying Opportunity [View article]
Your article makes some interesting points that I haven't read elsewhere: thank you! I worry that MCD's efforts expand or change menu offerings will continue to have a negative operational impact, however. I also think there is underlying tension with franchisees that Oak Brook needs to also address before the glory days of the stock return.

At least beef prices hit all (burger) places relatively equally.

  • Cramer's Mad Money - 10 Things To Watch In The Week Ahead (6/13/14) [View article]
djkidm - What do you think is taking their place? The spend of Americans on food outside the home has been rising since 2008, so the money is going somewhere. If not to chains, then where? Fast casual chains are certainly doing well, like Panera (PNRA) for example. So are some relatively on-trend QSRs like Chipotle (CMG). Anyway, I think it is about distinguishing how many dinosaurs are doomed, and what creatures will take their place.

  • Cramer's Mad Money - 10 Things To Watch In The Week Ahead (6/13/14) [View article]
Bob Evans (BOBE) may indeed split up, but Cramer's "10 things to watch" is wearing mighty thin - it gives him plenty to talk about now, and allows him to shout "Bingo" every few weeks, but offers investors very little actual guidance.

  • McDonald's looks to break same-store sales losing streak [View news story]
I still think the strategic grinding away of the MCD's long-term prospects will continue as long as McDonald's have an overly complex menu, US customers have a diminishing perception of their food's basic integrity, and a deteriorating relationship with their franchisees.

  • McDonald's And Franchisees: Part 3 Of 3 Ways To Tell When The Worst Is Over [View article]
    Craig,

Thanks for you comments and kind words. I would find MCD executive talk about possibilities beyond the USA more convincing if they weren't using funds that could be allocated to those opportunities to buy back MCD shares on US markets. I also agree that the international distraction factor can be high, as can the fragility of international ventures.
    Kind regards,
    M

Maxnsl - thanks for your comment. I am thinking about doing a piece on innovation, which MCD used to do well (though a lot of that bubbled up from franchisees, which is harder to make happen now, apparently). Anyway, the trick is to innovate but keep the operational impact moderate to low when you roll the product out.
