  • Jos. A. Bank: Buy One Share And Get Two Free [View article]
The addition of another $50M in cash to the piggy bank, equivalent to ~5% of the companies market cap.
An admission by management that the status quo is not working and a commitment to change the way they attract consumers and how they position themselves from a value standpoint.

Negative news is priced into the stock. Buy when there is blood in the water.

    Holt -

What seemed apparent when I was researching the article is that the company put in place a "sale" strategy during the recession that worked, and now times have changed, and they have been too slow to adjust their marketing approach or how they deliver a value proposition to consumers. The CEO made it clear they are working on refining this aspect of the business.

More importantly, I go back to the fact the company has almost 60% gross margins without a tuxedo business (80%+ margins for MW) even being a material part of the company yet.

MW has gross margins of around 45% for its entire business. Jos Banks has the opportunity to get much more competitive on price and drive sales volume because they have such astronomical gross margins currently.

I got tired of the accusations of just pitching ideas to support positions if I was long/short a certain stock. I stopped writing about companies I have a financial interest in for that reason.

  • Applephoria Is Translating Into Lost Opportunities For Investors [View article]

I am pretty clear that Apple remains a great investment for those looking for a stock to add to a dividend portfolio. My point is that those looking for capital appreciation on their investment, not just dividend income, have better options.

Whatever they are conditioning customers to is working since the company generates close to 60% in gross margin on its apparel.

If you think about it, common sense would seem to say that the majority of the volume of sales for Jos Banks comes out of their promotions (like what you referenced above). They might do a smattering of full priced sales. What that tells me is that they are plenty profitable on their promotions assuming those make up a lions share of their business.

  • Restoration Hardware: Valuation Supported By Rejuvenated Brand [View article]
I probably would not chase it at these levels. Although in saying that, the commentary on the conference call was extremely bullish and leads me to believe there is still material upside in the name. I would sell out of the money puts to generate some premium and try to lock in a lower entry point if the stock were to pull back.

  • How To Invest In Arkansas Best After Its ~75% Move In The Last 60 Days [View article]
It could be, but I think the YRC Worldwide leak about the buyout interest was the bargaining chip that ABFS management played. Consider that this news came out after a deal in principle had been reached with the Teamsters, even though the discussions had already taken place with YRCW. If I am a union employee for ABFS, I now know that another company (who offers significantly less pay/benefits) is interested in buying ABFS. I think that is both the carrot and the stick and will carry more weight than anything until leading up to the deal being signed.

  • Titan Machinery: Company Set To Capitalize On Long-Term Food Production Demand [View article]
I would presume they are just as effected as others. However, I would also assume a rise in rates is going to be accompanied by a loosening of credit standards as it should signal an improving economy which should offset any negative from rising rates (if the rise in rates actually correlates with an improving economy)

  • Callaway Golf: Is A Turnaround Underway For This Golf Retailer? [View article]
Slightly more than 1/3 of the companies revenue is driven from Driver sales. The balance comes from golf balls (if your like me you lose close to $20 worth a round), irons/putters (if your like me you might snap them on a tree when you miss a shot), and apparel/accessories.

And yes most golf freaks do replace there driver every other year, or every season, when the latest and great technology comes out promising a little extra distance off the tee.

Service revenue is not going to turn around. It just needs to decline at a manageable rate. Peak service revenue has come and gone...and that is ok as long as BB10 unit sales at a high level prove to be the reason for the decline.

The problem with buying the options is that the stock can go up, maybe even materially, and your option may still lose value. BlackBerry is priced for a large move around earnings. If that does not materialize, the only one's profiting from an options trade will be those selling the options...

Many also felt the same way leading up to the last earnings report and here the stock sits roughly unchanged 75 days later. Keep things in perspective and you can generate incremental income/profit waiting for the move higher to happen.

  • Taylor Morrison: Fresh Off Its IPO, This Homebuilder Is Flying Under The Radar [View article]
Mortgage rates are a concern. I 100% agree. I think they are such a big concern that the Fed will work as hard as possible to hold them down. We already know that as QE starts to taper, the fed is going to to continue to hold short term rates down. We also have hints that the fed will taper through ending treasury purchases but continuing to buy Mortgage securities. Both of these items will help keep a lid on mortgage rates.
