    Buybacks are a mechanism for shrinking market cap which can make future upside more possible for the remaining shares. Icahn is correct the firm is massively overcapitalized which is one reason why shares are chronically undervalued.

    I was interested in the technical price part of your article.

    One way to analyze these things is to compare the return around the event you are analyzing with the average holding period return in the same instrument. For example, compare the one week before the announcement to the average one week return in apple stock during the evaluation period. You can then apply a statistical test to evaluate the odds such a deviation results from random chance, or is likely to be significant.
