I am aware of this (though did fail to mention it). If Foxconn can do this, why wouldn't Apple?

  • The iPhone 5 (AAPL) launch has once more made iOS the most popular smartphone platform in the U.S, but Europe is a different story. Kantar ComTech believes the iPhone's U.S. smartphone share for the 12 weeks ending Oct. 28 came in at 48.1% - that's up from the year-ago period's 22.4%, and slightly above Android's (GOOG) 46.7%. But in the EU5, the iPhone's share rose only 90 bps Y/Y to 21.2%, while Android's rose 1300 bps to 63.9%. Windows Phone had 4.7% of the EU5 , and 2.7% of the U.S., ahead of the WP8 launches. • Apple (AAPL -3.6%) has sold off in early trading, apparently on news clearing firms are raising their margin requirements for positions due to fears of being too heavily concentrated in the $526B company. One firm, COR Clearing, raised its margin requirement to 60% from 30%. [View news story]
Samsung GS3 is technologically superior to the iPhone 4 & 5. Sure, if you like iOS and Apple's industrial design there are reasons to buy an iPhone, but based on guts, Apple doesn't win. (There are plenty of other devices that this can be said about as well.)

Rumor has it that the GS4 will have a 1080p screen. Maybe the next iPhone will get another row of apps?

  • Stick With Supervalu - A Sale Is In The Works [View article]
I agree with everyone in that it'll be a binary outcome (at least in the short term) - $3.50+ (or whatever) if a deal gets done, below $2 if it doesn't. medium-term i agree with browndlee that they can sell selectively even if they can't get an attractive price for the entire company.

  • A hitch in Cerberus Capital's funding is stalling its pursuit of Supervalu (SVU -15.9%), Bloomberg has sources reporting. It comes down to the post-acquisition debt-revenue mix - and if Supervalu has to sell assets on its own, big tax payments lie ahead. [View news story]
seems like they are - they're just having trouble making a bid happen.

  • The NYT's Adam Davidson takes a train ride from New York to Washington. Inside, "it's all tidy and digital, everybody absorbed in laptops and iPhones," but outside, "traveling south is like moving through a curated exhibit of urban and industrial decay." For much of the line's existence, "New York and DC were subordinate to the roaring engines of productivity in between," but that model has been flipped. [View news story]
i lived in delaware for a summer and i swear at least once a week the news headlines were about groundwater pollution or something of that nature

Amtrak itself is an extension of the govt/financial wealth - it is certainly not the cheapest method to get between DC and NY. On it you'll find lobbyists/financiers that expense tickets (or just do not care about the expense) - on a Mega or Bolt bus you'll find the working-class people that the author muses about being absent from the inbetween.

The goal: a normal 9:30-4:00 trading session. The exchange, along with Nasdaq OMX (NDAQ), BATS and Direct Edge, continues to test a backup solution that would route trading through the Arca platform if the floor can't open. [View news story]
