  • 700 arrested after protest on NY's Brooklyn Bridge [View article]
Well put, it's hard to say much more. I'd just like to add as well that most people interviewed (but definitely not all, as i've seen plenty of older/younger people featured) are college or graduate students attending $40,000-year liberal arts schools and majoring in humanities, distraught that they can't immediately get a $200,000-year job that utilizes their classical literature degree.

I live in the financial district and the protesters are getting very annoying, so I'm hoping they get bored and move on soon.

  • Vapor Corp.: An E-Cigarette Company With 85% Upside [View article]
    63 x 4 = ~$250m

$1.5 billion (splitting the change) with retailers earning a standard 50% gross margin = $750m wholesale

    250/350 = 33% ~= 37%.....

  • BlackBerry Z10 U.S. And Canada Sales Estimate: 1 Million Units Sold [View article]
obviously demand growth is slowing in developed economies as the parabolic growth phase (during which people were getting their first smartphone) is ending; there is a bit of lag regarding this in the 3rd world (though a lot of developing countries - indonesia, south africa, etc - are notorious for smartphone penetration).

IMO, blackberry is positioned best for this. I think that the realization that the hypergrowth is ending is what has killed apple's stock - sales are going to slow or shrink because people are only going to be replacing phones from now on. Since BBRY is now at basically negligible market share in developed countries (and small share in developing countries, other than some exceptions like indonesia), the only place to go is up - sales will increase from less-than-replacement rate to higher-than-replacement rate if they manage to win back some share with BB10 devices.

apple is the big loser - google/samsung/etc will be affected to a lesser degree (esp as samsung will enjoy a lot of 3rd world parabolic growth which will continue for some time).

i plan to write a full article about this sometime soon.

  • BlackBerry Buzzing In All The Right Places [View article]
i think the call is BS... or else, BlackBerry's PR is amazing and longs are going to be f'd when real numbers are reported.

300k doesnt seem that tough to move over a month in the 3 most popular geographies, though, so i think that such an estimate should be easily topped.

  • Apple: 7 Reasons Shorts Can't Sleep At Night [View article]
Exactly. The title is very ridiculous and inexplicable hostile towards people that have recently made a lot of money.

If anything, it's the margined longs who bought a "can't lose" stock at $650 who are freaking out.

  • The NYT's Adam Davidson takes a train ride from New York to Washington. Inside, "it's all tidy and digital, everybody absorbed in laptops and iPhones," but outside, "traveling south is like moving through a curated exhibit of urban and industrial decay." For much of the line's existence, "New York and DC were subordinate to the roaring engines of productivity in between," but that model has been flipped. [View news story]
Amtrak itself is an extension of the govt/financial wealth - it is certainly not the cheapest method to get between DC and NY. On it you'll find lobbyists/financiers that expense tickets (or just do not care about the expense) - on a Mega or Bolt bus you'll find the working-class people that the author muses about being absent from the inbetween.

  • Apple's Positive Uncertainty: Universal Remote iPad [View article]
you're right, i don't. but for this to be an important product, apple has to sell tens or hundreds of millions of them. and i do not think that the market for high end remotes is that big...

  • Why Annie's Stock Is Bound To Drop [View article]
While I do not disagree with the overall premise, I think that your critique of the balance sheet is weak, and should have been point #5, not #1, if on here at all.

Yes, there is no PP&E, but there's nothing wrong with their contract manufacturing business model. Current cash basically covers all liabilities, and cash + receivables (which I would consider to be almost as good as cash) cover liabilities by more than 2x, even applying a discount to AR.

Your point on goodwill is fair, but you should go into detail about why it may be written down... i.e. if it is related to an acquisition of some weak brand that isn't doing well. If not, then worrying about it may not be that appropriate.

But again, good article, and the stock appears to be overvalued. However, there's always a chance that this runs like Monster energy or Chipotle... it's really difficult to short a stock like this so early in its life cycle.

  • Some of the iPhone 5's (AAPL) finer details are getting criticized. Among the issues: 1) The iPhone 5 won't support simultaneous voice and data on Verizon and Sprint's 4G LTE networks, unlike many other LTE phones. 2) A $29 adapter meant to link the iPhone 5's new dock connector with older accessories won't work with some speakers. 3) Until they're rewritten, existing iPhone apps will display black borders on the iPhone 5, due to its larger display and new aspect ratio. [View news story]

This phone will flop. Sure, there will be some people upgrading from an old iPhone to this one, but there won't be a ton of people going from 4S to 5 and I don't imagine many switching over from android because of this phone. If anything, uncommitted waiting smartphone buyers have now been pushed to the GSIII or Nexus.

  • It's Finally Time To Short Chipotle [View article]
Congratulations on your success - I mean that sincerely.

But I think that expectations are high and valuation is very questionable - right now the market values Chipotles at $10 million per restaurant, and that seems a bit silly.
