  • Inflation? Just look at the deflation all around you - cars, clothes, home energy, hotel stays, furniture and appliances, electronic gadgets of all kinds. "There's no grand conspiracy to keep the headline number down," Matt Busigin writes.  [View news story]
Deflation? Give me a break. It's energy costs that dictate the pricing of every tangible good as things but be shipped by boat, train, truck or plane. Higher oil raises shipping costs and higher shipping is passed onto the consumer. There may be deflation is services and with inflation in everything else getting cheaper in real terms (legal bills, hair cuts, wages for employees, etc.), but that does not compensate for the rise food, energy, and manufactured goods (other than personal electronics) that have come from Bernanke's lose monetary policy.

  • The Big Fade on the REIT Yield Premium [View article]
There are still some high yield REITs out there that deliver high yield such as CYS, NYMT, and CIM. However, they profit off the spread between the return on a MBS versus the Fed Fund rates. When Bernanke raises rates, its time to get out.

If you are short on oil, buying Southwest may be a good short term buy as their stock is strongly inversely correlated.

  • Airlines Soar Despite High Fares [View article]
High capital costs, high fuel costs, unionized labor, super high price elasticity through sites such as kayak, and no brand loyalty make airlines a bad investment. Buying an airline right now at best is an indirect short on oil. If oil continues to rise, airlines lose by pricing out customers and through lower margins (more than offsetting higher revenues) on increases not passed to the consumer.

  • Why Airline Stocks Are Not Long-Term Investments [View article]
Airlines, like rental cars, are one the worst sectors to invest in. High capital costs, high fuel costs, unionized labor, super high price elasticity through sites such as kayak, and no brand loyalty. Basically buying an airline right now at best is an indirect short on oil. If oil continues to rise, airlines lose by pricing out customers and through lower margins on increases not passed to the consumer.

  • 5 Reasons to Buy Ancestry.com [View article]
I think that switching to a single pay model to buy a family tree sold to you by the company would be a more profitable model. I have not used the site or extensively, but I think someone would only need to search for their family history once, not pay $30 per month to check something that does not update frequently.

A lot of those companies have serious fundamental problems and are not necessarily values (AOL, CSCO for example). PBR also is near 52-week lows as well and looks to be bargain.

  • Time to Sell Munis Again [View article]
Muni's make a good short right now, but shorting treasuries is better. The tax advantages and supply reductions from lower issues of muni's (less govt spending/less debt) provides a support for these bonds. Treasuries, on the other hand, continue to be issued at record amounts and the only buyer seems to be the Fed. The combo of inflation, higher rates, or an honest default (more likely dishonest one through inflation) will kill treasuries.

  • ETF mostly-Powershares test Portfoliation [View instapost]
Paper trading may be safer, but the real learning comes when you put some financial skin in the game. You've done this since 2009, so two years is enough (and maximizes the learning curve) time to paper trade.
