VaR is like flying a plane with a broken altimeter that only works above 1000 ft. and then stick below 1,000 ft. There are mountains out there. Keep flying based on your broken altimeter and a you will eventually hit something. Use of VaR provides a dangerous level of comfort and familiarity with position exposures most of the time, but can't tell you where the mountains are.
