  • Will This Late Arrival Become The Talk Of The Dividend ETF Party? [View article]
According the to data listed at http://bit.ly/UQiaDw, the 5YR standard deviation of the underlying index is 22.91% compared to the S&P 500's 19.02%. The five-year Sharpe ratio is 0.323 compared to the S&P 500's 0.051. So it looks like if you can stand the volatility, you may profit from a higher returns.

    Eli,
Thanks for an enjoyable read, with one minor exception: the idiom is "utmost," not "up-most" or "upmost." Sorry for the grammatical quibble, but I have corrected too many undergraduate essays during my career.

  • 5 Years Until Retirement? What's Your Plan? Part II [View article]
Congratulations, Bob. Excellent analysis, as usual. And nicely written too.
Are there any utility stocks that might be suitable for this strategy right now?

  • VCIT: An Alternative Approach To Tackling Corporate Debt [View article]
If you're going to go intermediate, I like CIU at 3.27% and 4.31 years.

Sorry, bsorge, I didn't catch your meaning. Did you mean both shorter duration and a yield over 3% with some other bond ETF?

VCIT's average effective duration of 6.23 years (Morningstar) is too long for me. I prefer VCSH at 2.81 years. If interest rates kick up, VCIT's yield difference over VCSH (3.37% vs. 2.22%) will likely get wiped out by the decline in its market price.

  • Backtesting A Portfolio Of Low Beta, High Quality Dividend Payers [View article]
Interesting article, but I have a few questions. It looks like there are only three criteria to bump a stock out of the top twenty: beta above .80, yield less than 2%, or lower Greenblatt rank. Which is the most important? 1) Both a dividend cut or a strongly rising price can drop the yield below 2%. The first case equates to selling your dogs, while the second equates to taking profits in your winners. Is that why the 6 month rebalance works better, because it gives your winners longer to run? 2) Beta can go up due to higher downside OR upside volatility. Does this mean that a sharply rising price can knock a stock out of the list? 3) Does the Greenblatt rating change faster than yield or beta? Is it therefore the main factor in producing turnover? Thanks.
