  • Japan Small-Cap ETFs Will Capture The Upside [View article]
Addendum - another ETF to watch in this category is JOF, as pointed out by Tony (thanks!).

I like JOF, and for full disclosure I should say that I already hold it in my portfolio, having bought at 7.10 (they are now 7.88).

From a ROI perspective JOF looked just slightly less attractive then DFJ, CSJ and SCJ at the time of writing, but it is definitely worth a look if you are as keen about this market as I am.

  • Apple's iPad Cannibalizes iPhone In The Middle East: Profitability Threatened? [View article]
An interesting point. Visual acuity issues are actually more prevalent in the GCC then in the USA, due to both lack of diagnosis and treatment and to higher levels of Diabetes. However, this is felt more among the older members of the population, and they are a minor share of the iPhone/iPad market.
Again, the key question for me was whether the iPhone is loosing its hold on a function that is critical for the non-Western users: mobile browsing. That this is being lost to another Apple product may seem irrelevant, apart from the fact that it could be clouding our ability to identify a new trend.

  • Apple's iPad Cannibalizes iPhone In The Middle East: Profitability Threatened? [View article]
While I would not want to jump to conclusions, I think that 120,000 distinct users in a specific market cannot be entirely disregarded as a sample.
My main point of interest does relate to the iPad-iPhone relationship: iPhone revolutionized mobile internet, but if this core competence is being transferred to the iPad, then the iPhone looses (one) important competitive advantage vs. its very aggressive new competitors.
Keep in mind that in these non-Western markets, lack of infrastructure and late adoption meant the older types of web browsing were almost entirely bypassed in favor of new technology such as the mobile internet. These same markets are, according to Apple, a major part of their growth forecast, so a weakness here will have disproportionate impact on APPL results, and hence identifying such potential issues early is of major importance for us as investors.
